Hey guys,
quick question for ye all. I have a potential opportunity with work to do about a weeks work in Winton. The family has done the whole longreach winton stuff about 18 months ago.
If you had a starting point of Winton however, and 2 weeks to explore, is there anything worthwhile out that way?
We are in Brissy, so having a starting point of 1600km down the road, it probably gives us the opportunity to go places we usually wouldn't reach on the 2 week easter hols.
Plan would be for me to drive out there for work with the trailer and get the wife and kids to fly out the day I finish work.....
Any ideas???

Plenty Highway, Alice Springs, Uluru, Kings Canyon.

I like Nomad's suggestion.
Or head south to Birdsville, day trip out to Big Red, down to Cordilla Downs, Cameron Corner etc.

What time of year JD. Easter?
Could also head north to Lawn Hill, back toward Cairns and take in Normanton, Undarra etc, depending on weather/roads.

Thanks guys, will take a look at those places. Yep Geoff, easter

Might be a bit early in the season but
Lawn hill (Adels Grove), Kingfisher camp, Borroloola (King Ash Bay), Lorella Springs

For Winton it self this is a good place to start looking.

Two weeks for Winton - Central OZ - Brisbane would be a push but not insurmountable. (The fastest way back to Bris from Kings Canyon is via Adelaide believe it or not - a mate drives to Henbury Station a bit).
Lawn Hill area is difficult to add into any given trip given it's in the back blocks of nowhere and you are most of the way there. Plenty to do on the way home depending on which way you run. Stop off at the remote sections of Carnarvon since you are heading back down via that side.

Firstly, I don't know enough about the seasons out there and what access roads would be like at that time of year.
But if I where in the same position I would either go SW and check out Diamantina NP or take the slightly more direct route home and go South to try and get in Lochern NP and Wellford NP before heading to Quilpie then home.
Never done any of this area, but that pretty much fits what you say about being just too far to do on normal shorter breaks.
Besides, it looks like there is a fair to be explore out there; https://www.npsr.qld.gov.au/parks/pdf/central-west-vg.pdf (https://www.npsr.qld.gov.au/parks/pdf/central-west-vg.pdf)
Failing that, go with GBC's suggestion and have a look around the top of Carnarvon Gorge as the shortest run home.

Porcupine Gorge (about 60k north of Hughenden) - https://www.google.com.au/maps/uv?hl=en&pb=!1s0x6a2c406ab7b08427:0xf00eef26261c220!2m19!2m2!1i80!2i80!3m1!2i20!16m13!1b1!2m2!1m1!1e1!2m2!1m1!1e3!2m2!1m1!1e5!2m2!1m1!1e4!3m1!7e115!4shttps://www.npsr.qld.gov.au/parks/porcupine-gorge/!5sporcupine+gorge+-+Google+Search&imagekey=!1e1!2shttps://www.npsr.qld.gov.au/parks/porcupine-gorge/images/porcupine.jpg&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiHlevG-fLRAhXDmJQKHTaLD3sQoioIdDAO (https://www.google.com.au/maps/uv?hl=en&pb=!1s0x6a2c406ab7b08427:0xf00eef26261c220!2m19!2m2!1i80!2i80!3m1!2i20!16m13!1b1!2m2!1m1!1e1!2m2!1m1!1e3!2m2!1m1!1e5!2m2!1m1!1e4!3m1!7e115!4shttps://www.npsr.qld.gov.au/parks/porcupine-gorge/!5sporcupine+gorge+-+Google+Search&imagekey=!1e1!2shttps://www.npsr.qld.gov.au/parks/porcupine-gorge/images/porcupine.jpg&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiHlevG-fLRAhXDmJQKHTaLD3sQoioIdDAO)
Claremont / Emerald area for the gemfields
Charters Towers / Ravenswood gold fields (Burdekin Dam area)
From Winton you could duck up through porcupine Gorge, then up to Cobold Gorge, Undara, Atherton Tablelands area, then home down the Coast ?
Wouldnt be hard to fill in a couple of weeks.

As KB mentioned.... You can get to Windorah (camp at Cooper Creek) in a day easily using the Winton - Jundah Rd, doesn't see heaps of traffic on that route really but is a nice drive, be prepared not to see many other vehicles if you go that way (we only saw 4 vehicles from Windorah to Bladensburg Nat Park). Next day your in Birdsville, then a few days to explore there and onto Innamincka and the Dig Tree etc.....You could go from Windorah to Birdsville via Haddon Corner and Cordillo Downs, it is doable in one huge massive day if road conditions are good, but best to allow 2 days to do it.
