Title: Portable Vacuum to seal storage bag
Post by: LB on January 30, 2017, 02:15:45 PM
We have had trouble closing our camper lately and we suspected that it maybe the egg crate foam was causing the issue along with the doona. Folding in the sides of the doona away from the bows and removed the egg crate topper and low and behold the camper literally closed itself.

The issue is we cant just fold in the egg crate foam as it will just unfold. It will fit in the back of the draw under the bed but expands making it impossible to open the draw. So I was thinking if we vacuum sealed it that would prevent it blocking up the draw.

So I was wondering if any one had ever used one of those 12v car vacuums so we could vacuum it back up when packing up. We can reverse our airbed pump but the nozzle is not big enough.

Where do you put your pillows?  That was our problem.  Moved pillows to the floor in front of the under bed drawer and the problem went away.  😀

We put our pillows in front of the draw as well and usually I take one in the car with me for a snooze, so that was not the issue, we just had too much on the sides were the bows come down.

Maybe trim a little from the sides of the egg-crate??

We would have to trim off quite a bit but from the top but this may be just possible. Thank you hadn't thought of that

Lb,

Just thinking, it may not work but what about if you put a circle of elastic around the top & bottom when you fold/push the egg-crate in. That should hold it away from the sides.

Egg crate foam is quite bulky and that maybe cause issues closing in the middle as we already have the doona there

I've got an 18v Makita dust buster. While it's reasonable powerful, not sure it would have the grunt to fully deflate a space bag.

I used a space bag at home for winter doonas and stuck them in the wardrobe drawer.  A slow leak followed and then we couldn't open the drawer. Required a bit of disassembly to get it out. Something to be mindful of.

That's is a huge concern had that happen before we are going to try cutting it down

Tested out GeoffA's suggestion to trim down the egg crate foam. Took 10cm of the sides and cut about 65cm off the top which whilst packing we put down was placed on the end of the bed with the doona, and the camper closed with total ease. Thanks Geoff such a simple idea can't believe I didn't think about that before.
