Hello Swaggers,
I'm contemplating the move from my Oztent to something more suitable for the aging bones. Just wondering what's out there that is comparable to the Jurgen Tufftrax?
I want something that's:
Easy to setup
Able to reach most places
Sleeps 4 (kidlets wife and I)
Suits outdoor cooking/showering
Has minimal canvas
Preferably new, less than $50k
Innovative
Single axle (14ft +-)
So far the list consists of:
Said Tufftrax
Avan Ray
Jayco expander outback
MDC XT12
I like the Complete Campsite exodus 14 but unfortunately can't quite reach the $88k, was thinking a custom build but wife is very worried we will never actually finish it (probably true if I'm honest).
Any other model ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Darran

Hi Darren of ur list I've had two expandas and can rate them. Looked at a avan and really thought their build quality made Jayco look good?
-
Hi Darran, and welcome to MySwag.
Maybe add the Echo Kavango to your list?

Awesome this is what I need to hear, I've had a bee in my bonnet about Jayco, no real reason why but just can't get 'junko' out of my head. A mate has a swan and it looks fine for the money. I was a bit worried about the height of the expander OB did you ever have issues on tracks with trees?

Thanks Geoff, they look sharp! I hadn't seen this as of yet. Very interesting indeed.

You could also look at the Conqueror UEV490. Probably used, to stay under your budget....

Welcome Darran
Happy with our Kavango. If we didn't need to accomodate 4 then the options for hybrids within a similar price range were much broader. We didn't want a caravan that had been "toughened up".
You'd be looking at 2nd hand to get under 50 though. They come up rarely. Join the Kavango Owners FB group as one of the members was selling a little while ago due to health reasons.
Another very nice unit is the Evoke from Evolution Campers. As it's built locally you can customise. The owner of the company (Nick) is a longtime MySwag member.

Have a look at the Lifestyle Breakaway. Ticks the boxes you listed

Second this. Or a recon by lifestyle as well.
-
The only thing I wasn't too happy about with the breakaway was the fridge having to be out whilst the bottom bunk is in use. It just seemed weird to me. I'll check out the Evoke.
I was starting to look at the front fold options but couldn't justify the money for all that canvas on wheels.
Thanks again for all the input.

Yeh nice!!! That's a great idea, see this is what I was after. Now how much and where do I get one lol

Slight correction - the Evoke is from Regional Campers (not Evolution). The showroom thread is here: http://www.myswag.org/index.php?topic=45870.50
The Evoke is on the third page.

There is no information (that I could find) about their off-road hybrid on their website.

You are correct, and it is something we are working on. Our website has reached its maximum allowed pages.
We are working on a new website, however it is a slow process. It is something we hope to have sorted out by the end of the year.
Cheers

Dont discount custom made. Some are professionally finished.
We looked around for a year, and were nearly going to order a new one.
Out of the blue we found ours, its a custom build that was exactly what we were looking for.
Finish is second to none and best thing is the price.
Had plenty of positive comments from people who have inspected it, and even an offer to buy.
Cheers Glen

You might like to consider http://www.nationalcampers.com.au/hermit_(hybrid_camper).html (http://www.nationalcampers.com.au/hermit_(hybrid_camper).html)
I have a 'stretched' Hermit 8, which is perfect for a couple.
Very simple design and pretty bullet proof.
I haven't seen one of their Hermit 13s, but the description sounds like it may suit your needs.

Hey Nick I'd be keen to get a price on the bunk option if possible.

That seems very reasonable for the price? Must be a catch lol.

So far I've not found any real issues with mine, apart from there being no proper seal between the side awning and the van side, and the lifters on the pop top not being quite up to the task. Both easily fixed.
The construction is simple and obviously relatively cheap. It's a gal steel chassis, with a marine ply floor, and fibreglass sandwich panel walls and roof. It wouldn't win any beauty contests, but it's functional and durable. What I was after was an alternative to a hardfloor camper which didn't involve packing wet canvas in with the bed, and minimised setup and pack-up times. The Hermit ticked the boxes for me.

Can anyone shed more light on the Eagle Chief Hybrid? Seems cheap enough, but that must come at a cost!

Probably made in the same chinese factory as the MDC, seeing they are almost identical, which in turn are almost identical to the Lifestyle AT11.
Don't know how they do it for $34,000....even MDC wouldn't be able to compete with that ??

Yeh makes you wonder. Is the AT11 Chinese also?

If you mean lifestyle AT11s? All lifestyle campers are Australian made.

Yeh I figured from the money they are worth they would be Aussie.

shows you how much $ some companies are making per unit.
-
Yeh certainly feels that they are charging what people will pay rather than what it's worth....

Or.....what some overseas companies may or may not be putting in the camper...like the quality of steel....same for the panels they make the sides out of....etc, etc ??
Same as a chinese car.....why are they so cheap compared to say a Toyota Corolla ??

You can bet your kitchen sink on both... cheap quality wouldn't be rare, and large margins certainly aren't.. there would be so many people that see bling and go "that's for me" without climbing under the trailers etc... or researching on the interwebs.
