Title: help with varnish
Post by: me217 on October 19, 2016, 09:34:54 PM
hey all, I'm currently trying to varnish something i made for the missus and its really frustrating me, i have stained and varnished a cupboard before and it turned out great considering it was brushed.

now I'm using the exact same stain and varnish, the first coat of varnish went on fine, but the second coat went really wrinkly, so i figured it went on to heavy, so i sanded it back and tried spraying it, i went really light just enough to get a gloss, and it has wrinkled up again, i have been leaving it 24 hours between coats, as per instructions on the tin.

the only thing I've done different this time was when i did the cupboard i didn't sand between coats, this time i did. using 320grit,

Is it stain and varnish in the same tin or separate?

Separate. Stain then wait 24 hours then varnish then 24 hours and varnish and so on.

Too humid perhaps, so not fully dry?

Maybe leave it a couple of days between coats?

Are they both the same type of paint, ie acrylic or oil based ?
