Title: Sand dunes
Post by: PWE on September 18, 2016, 08:33:06 PM
I saw a clip on YouTube from Alloffroad where a couple of Defenders and a Discovery cross the Simpson. The Defenders cross the dunes by driving very slowly. The Discovery tried the slow approach but it did not work. If had to put the foot down to cross. Both tn low tyre pressure.
The Defenders had wider tyres. All vehicles we loaded similar, well that is what I could tell from the clip.

Anyway, have anyone tried the slow approach?

I know the owner of the videos and vehicles...

The slow approach is preferred as is stopping before digging holes if you fail to proceed...

Cheers Tombie...

Every off road vehicle is different and has to be driven differently (even across the same model, depending on how it is set up) - weight, accessories, driver style etc.   Watching the clip - the disco has smaller tires than the Defenders and was scraping its diffs/underside. Mostly likely its just needing momentum to keep it moving to get it over the more rutted sections. The defender is also 500kg lighter (factory spec)

Thanks, last time I crossed the Simpson i had a Jeep.
The jeep was a Commander with kerb weight of 2230kg. My LC76 kerb weight is 2250. Both have bullbat, winch, twin wheel carrier, same drawer, ect.
Cruiser is higher and have fatter, bigger tyres.
Planning on a trip next year, so curious to see have they compare.
