Title: ARB Awning vs Generic Awning
Post by: Thommo18 on September 10, 2016, 07:38:43 PM
Hi all,
Looking @ purchasing a Awning for the 4wd.
Just wondering what peoples thoughts are regarding the ARB awnings, there seems to be a huge difference in price regarding awnings.
And yes I know the old saying You get what u pay for!  ;D but is there comparable quality brands to the ARB brand or are they the bench mark?

Regards,
Thommo18

FWIW I have the Rhino awning which is simalar coin to the ARB.  Mine lives in a garage a lot and is okay but my mates that's always outside has detoritaed with the sun. So if I had to replace ours and for the use it gets I'd buy cheap.

I was going to say if you want the best of the best it's the Hannibal safari awning but there a grand plus and you need a decent mount. But you don't use poles and I have seen them out withstanding a gale that was blowing touring tents and swags over !

Thanks for the info!
Yes when you add the cost of roof racks, mount kit & awning it all adds up & so spoilt for choice!!  :D

Never had a need for awning until now.  Will really only need it for a few weeks while we swag it.

Bought the Aldi 2 x 2.5 metre on sale last week.  Can see why it was $169 compared to the Supapeg equivalent size of $288 for the Eco RV or $454 for the Stand Easy ERV.  But it was assembled very poorly so took it back.

Bought the Super Cheap equivalent for $199 and it comes with a 1m LED light strip and dimmer.  The SCA has anodised aluminium poles and is assembled a lot better.  It will do what we need.

That's interesting KB, I have last year's Aldi awning, and it's a Powerful 4x4 one, and has been out in gale force winds when I've slept through a storm, with no effect...

They must have changed supplier this year

I have the Rhino rack foxwing which I have been happy with however it is a bit of a fiddle as the poles need to be kept in the vehicle and have to be pegged out with ropes.
I have had it for years though and it is holding up well and is reasonably sturdy. I did snap a hinge a few years ago, the spare part was easily sourced but was a B&^stard of a job to replace.

If I was buying again I would buy a rapid wing from supapeg. Great looking bit of gear.
Their side awnings are also very nice, if your just after a side awning I would still go with the supapeg.

I have not come across the hannibal awing before, they also look very nice!! Can they be somehow fitted to just crossbars? I have no real need for a full rack.

Don't see why not but I think you'd have to Dick around your self. You need to make the mounting solid as obviously this where they are hinged from. I think they are pretty much designed to suit Hannibal racks. That and the $1,000 plus they are was what turned me

Reckon they all come out of the same factory in Asia.  The Aldi one was just put together wrong.  Poor quality control.  No way could I have fitted a wall as the plastic ends did not line up with the slots plus the poles were very loose.  I could have pulled it apart and fixed it but couldn't be bothered.

Must be a different model, everything on my one is aluminum... Disappointing - we were thinking about getting one for the other side of the truck...

I saw this on display at a Brissie show a few years ago & will probably get the larger model for the Disco if & when funds allow. The bloke in the pics is no lightweight midget & he demo'd it for me by grabbing it & really giving it a good old up & down, side to side workout. The 'cruiser was rockin' & rollin' all over the place.

I just got myself an ARB awning for fathers day as I thought I would go the better quality and take it from one vehicle to the next. Still haven't got my roof rack yet.
