Title: Looking for awhile and still looking.....
Post by: jmsaintpierre on September 02, 2016, 01:37:04 PM
Hi all,

I am in the market to buy a camper, but geee, it s a bit harder and more confusing that I thought it would be.
Aussie made vs imports, new vs second hand, hard vs soft floor, off vs on road......list goes on..
However, I think I am on the right track.
I am pretty sure I will get a not only Aussie made trailer but  also a local manufacturer.
I don t have a problem with imports trailers as such, I personally think they are over priced compared to the local ones. If the import were around $4000 to $5000 new, then I would consider them, but given you can get a local Aussie made one for around $10000 to $12000 for an off road and an import for $7500/$8500, I don t consider that good value ( just my opinion and 2c). For a couple of thousand more, I d rather support the local industry.
So so far, I have shortlisted customline, camel and bayside. All have a good entry level one that suits my need and have a few specials on which makes the, interesting. At this stage m edging towards customline as like there approach and pricing.
I have a few friends that have campers and all have told me, that though the bells and whittles are great, nothing beats a Aussie made canvas and good trailer box. I can always add features as I go by and experience the trailer camper.
Now as far as new vs second hand, that s a bit harder. Trying to find a local second hand trailer is a bit challenging. I like the idea of new, but if I can find something that suits me at a good price I Ll grab it. Problem is, though there a heaps of second hand trailers, the Aussie ones hold their value quite well compared to the imports, which is a bit of a catch 22, that if it s only a few thousand less than new, why not buy new...
Who knew it was going to be that hard....
The hunt continues...

Yep, tough decisions.

Pop your location into your profile and it may help if somebody knows a CT for sale in your local area.

Trackabout is another to keep an eye out for. You should get a good secondhand one in that price range.

In my opinion, and from experience, Do not buy new....unless you have to, to really get what you want. In the price range you are looking, you won't have too and you'll certainly appreciate this when you go to sell it.
Cheers, Dave.

Cheers dave,

Good advice,indeed.
I do think that second hand would be more appropriate to be honest. I probably be camping 4 to five times a year and never real remote like FNQ or Simpson desert...
Cheers

Hi guys,

Wondering if castaway campers are fully made and built in Aus? Web site reckons it is, But can t be 100% sure.
The entry one seems pretty cheap for an all Aussie made...
Any advice.

Yep, feeling your pain. Going through the same process at the moment.

Looked at imported and Australian made.

Considering new and second hand.

Seems cash doesn't make a difference in what they will sell for - "the finance companies just pay us cash anyway".

Good luck! 👍

Regards,
Dicko.

Thanks mate... Indeed looking at all avenues.
Even considering getting an off road Nathan or just trailer, trailer, get a a custom line tent fitted to it, get a drift a kitchen bolted o to the tailgate and do my own electrical as a sparky.
But then I noticed cast away. At $6600 for the entry level and $7700 for an upgrade, if really made entirely in Aus, it s a steal...
Though shipping would prob cost a bit..
