Title: Moreton Island
Post by: shakey55 on July 27, 2016, 10:05:33 AM
Seriously thinking of going to Moreton Island later this year (first time).

I have a fairly heavy soft floor camper (Central Coast Camper) that I would like to take as I will need it for trip back down the coast to Sydney as I will be stopping at several locations.

I tow the trailer with a Nissan Patrol (4.2 turbo).

What are fellow swaggers thoughts on taking the trailer onto Moreton Island ?

Biggest obstacle would be the western beach, can be quite soft and the hard turns onto the inland tracks but from there on its not much different to most sand driving.

Lower your tyre pressures and you'll be fine, a mate took his Kimberly Kamper over on one of our visits, and they weigh over 1.5 Tonne. He did get bogged on the Western inland bypass track when a vehicle came the other way, but I doubt he was running super low pressure at the time, likely 18 psi at best. Maxtrax got him out and going again. I towed a mates Cruiser through the middle of the island track when it had holed it's radiator, it weighs about 3 Tonne. Hardest part at times is getting off the Western  beach, it can be pretty chewed up from people getting bogged not running low enough tyre pressures

Some great campsites 1km North of the barge landing spot which are easy to get into with a trailer. That way you not stressing about towing the trailer.

You will do it easy - we tow a 1.7t camper with a Holden Colorado7 and it does Moreton easy, even the week after Easter when everything was really chopped up.

I have had the Kimberley Karavan 2.2T over there behind 3L patrol without any issues. Went across middle track then back via the northern track from blue lagoon to bulwer and down western beach without any issues. 15psi in patrol and 20psi in trailer. This was at Easter so trcks were reasonably soft.
