Title: Rio Olympics 2016 - general interest
Post by: scrapsD40 on July 17, 2016, 08:54:16 PM
Here's the thread to post up your thoughts, highlights and lowlights. I'm interested to see if there's any improvement in the Aus swim team this year.

They ****ed it by making only professional money people and no longer for amateurs... aren't there enough world championships and stuff for pros??

Then fill it with stupid sports, like golf and that Shit where you see half a dozen feet hanging out of the water spinning round.. ****in riveting "sports"

Me on the other hand think the Olympics are great, I will be watching as much of it as I can.

Was watching an interview with Jessica Fox on channel 7 on the weekend. Fantastic to see a young person who is not only dedicated to her sport but is down to earth, able to conduct herself well, and give sensible articulate answers during an interview.

Beats playing that pokemon garbage hands down any day!

I will try to watch synchronised swimming.
That's because 3 of the coaches of my daughter are in the team.
They will not win anything, but it will be great to watch.

And they are amateurs, they are not earning anything.

Too many of the Olympic organisers happy to have their nest feathered and vote to include Shit sports.  If they get the Olympics back to including only the "pure" sports it may then be worth watching again.  How many Greeks in the 8th century teed up for a round of golf?  And how many practiced holding their breath for five minutes so the soles of their feet could get a suntan?

To bolster more interest I think it should go back to the original Olympic way, i.e. all contestants with nil clothing. Definitely would be watching all the female sports.  :cup: :cup:

In 2008 I was on the CSR while the Beijing Games were on. This year I will be on the Gibb River Road for most of Rio.

Not sorry in either case.

what has really turned me off over recent  years is the TV coverage. The Games seem to be a vehicle for the broadcaster to promote itself and its commentary "stars". If I was home I'd been watching with the sound off.

The Olymics are multi-billion dollar vanity project by the elites, for the elites and which damn near bankrupts the host country/state. The sooner the world tells the Lords of the Rings to sod-off the better. Spend the outrageous fortune squandered on this circus on getting average kids especially, but Australians generally into sporting and healthy activities instead supporting a pampered group of elite athletes /sarc on: "Sacrificing everything for Australia" /sarc off.

The Olympics really gets my goat, its a privileged, corrupt organization that runs a two week circus once every four years (two if you count the Winter Olympics - now there is a forum to re-introduce nudey runs!), and it's the only thing where even I recognize I come across as a crotchedly old-school socialist as opposed to being a hard-core libertarian LOL. Spend the money instead on kids T-Ball or whatever it takes to reduce the modern child's unhealthy attachment to "screen time".

I feel sorry for any honest Aussie Olympians - that have their fate for Gold up against Russian and other Government sponsored drug cheats....

Countless thousands of hours or training; and 5am starts etc; over many years; sometimes micro seconds the difference in results; to have your medal robbed by a drug cheat.....

Did anyone watch that exposition about the matter on 4 Corners the other week.....??

What is it like its a news flash? Nobody knew the whole thing is a farce full of drug cheats and has been for years, like the tour-de-farce??

Didn't some bloke get his gold medal few weeks ago from the "games" from years ago cause some dude was disqualified for drugs... ???

I'll be watching as much of it as possible.

Take all the politics out of it!   Forget the rubbish that surrounds selections.   The host countries generally win out in the end with the influx of money during the games, and the tourism that results.   And the new facilities they have for years afterwards.

Our young kids train and work for years (generally without pay) to be the best in their sport, and then compete against the best in the world (if they're not too scared to come or already been caught cheating).

Kids learning their sport have heroes they want to be like and a worthy goal to aim towards.

Once the sports start it'll be great!

Yep...

My thoughts on the "GAMES" - if they don't make the "GAMES" go back to being amateur only (I can see professionals play world championships all the time), then just open it to druggos.. stop pretending it doesn't exist.
Also some of the ****in sports these days.. Golf? WTF?

The telecast would have you believe there are only swimmers in the Australian team, unless you win a medal. Then you might get a minute or two of your actual competition telecast.

The channel 7 'Olympics on 7' app is good especially if you pay the $19.95 premium to be able to watch all the sports and replays. Takes the chopping and changing in the TV coverage out of play and you can also watch more of the sports that 7 doesn't prioritise.

And premium content is free for Telstra customers so no $19.95 upfront, not sure about data usage though.

How has no one mentioned the "team refugees"  does that mean refugees have their own country now?
This is the weirdest thing I've ever seen at the Olympic games.
I always thought it was people representing countries not political position.  Does that mean there will be a "team trump" at the next games?

Cheers

Funny, but to me "refugee" has always suggested homeless, oppressed, living on charity etc etc  >:(

My wife who works in the sporting event industry (and has worked for several Olympic and Commonwealth Games Organizing Committee's in senior management) just told me that the refugee thing is some kind of IOC initiative...

Sounds all a bit odd to me...

About 1hr ago Alan Jones on 4BC said some female usa athlete had just won spectacularly in the "artistic gymnastics"....

"A black American, abandoned by her father as a kid; her mum a junkie; raised by the grandparents; everyone in the auditorium crying" - her finish was so amazing. ..

Can someone please post the clip up?....    I'm sick in bed atm...   but the eye candy may prove therapeutic. ...  LOL...   no, just kidding. ......

Bronte and Cate Cambell, what a pair of top girls. The didn't get a medal in the final of the 100mtre freestyle but their attitude towards their experience is how any person in sport, should be thinking.  ;)

"It doesn't matter that we didn't get a medal, we are at the Olympics, how good is that and we did our best on the day" Well done to these well grounded girls.  :cup:

The Rio Olympics are just a big joke. The spirit of the Olympic games has gone, sadly.
Here are just two examples of the carry on between different races. Disgusting.

Haven't been watching the Olympics much at all until today, got the day off work and am currently  watching the men's 105kg weight lifting...looks like a nice way to put your back out...or dislocate an elbow like I heard someone did the other day.

You've really got to wonder at the number a rent seekers in Australia's sporting ranks. Two examples just from last night. Firstly a 48 year old Bulgarian born kayaker who first competed at the Seoul Olympics in 1988. He ran last, by a long way. But he got a free trip to Rio. Secondly a hurdler who is more famous for jiggling her jugs before a race than running fast, she ran second last, by a long way.
Now I don't mind these people pursuing their dream, I just resent funding it.

I'm just as pissed off with the fact there's 10x more hangers on than "competitors"... all on the free ride.

The hurdler reached the semifinals of the olympic games. This places her in the top 24 or so in the world.
Goes this mean that in your opinion, Usain Bolt was odds on to win the 100, so we should not send any competitors as they will not win?
All credit to any competitor who has worked towards these games and is performing at the top level to the best of their ability.

Read my comments more closely before shooting your mouth off, firstly I've got no problem with her chasing her dream, only taxpayers funding it, secondly I watched it live and she was run out in the heats and thirdly what has Usain Bolt got to do with my comments? He carries on like a half wit but at least he can run which is more than you can say for Miss Jiggly Jugs.

You really have to laugh (not really) at the armchair critics, hangin chit on athletes that are the best in this country, going to the Olympics and then not reaching their full potential!  ::) You really don't have any idea of the sort of pressure and chit they go threw, do you????  >:D

Agree to the max.
We get too caught up with the medal count. The hurdler referred to earlier was put out in the heats. She only ranked 37th. In the olympics.
That to me is a fantastic effort.
My son was at the 2004 olympics on the coaching staff for the Matildas. Some of the armchair critics need to appreciate the effort put in just to qualify for the olympics and the amount of work that goes in to supporting them.
Congratulations to ALL our olympians and support crew.

Just on the drugs thing, the funniest thing i heard was they want to include skateboarding at the Tokyo games, but one of the worlds best has said it wouldn't be very successful due to drug testing.
Apparently the top skaters like a bit of gunja when skating, who would've guessed.
I reckon thats why the top golfers dropped out, cos most of them are potheads

The whole problem here is............. our selection trials are to far out = swimming 5mths FFS! This is only one example, the yanks, seven weeks out. ::)

Do any of you know how hard it is, to peak 5mths out and then time it right for a comp???  ???

I have a saying.......... So long as you have tried your best, on the day, then you should have no regrets. Can the armchair critics answer that, truthfully?  >:D

Unlees you have competed at the Elite level, then you really don't have a ratsarse ideas of what is involved.  ;)

Sorry but I've been there and know that!  :'(

The treatment afforded our Vietnam vets is, and always will be, one of the more disgraceful parts of Australian history.  But this has nothing to do with Australians competing at the Olympics.
Generally speaking, our athletes sacrifice a huge amount over a number of years to represent their country.  There are some, maybe 2%, who reap reasonable financial rewards for being elite athletes but the vast majority do it at the expense of a social life, job, career, etc. with no or little financial incentive.  Another group who make similar sacrifices is the coaching fraternity.
