Looking at purchasing a off road van from interstate, approx 2500-3500kms one way.
I figured flying to the nearest airport and hiring a 4wd to tow the van back would be the cheapest and least amount of time to get back home.
Anyone do this before?

Will you need a brake controller fitted to the tow tug?...just something to consider incase you've overlooked it.

May be cheaper to hire small truck if your just heading straight home.

One way hire will be way more expensive than two way as they'll have to ship it back to the originating depot.

Brake controller will be a definite. You will also need the breakaway system fitted if over 2Tonne. Also need to make sure the 12 pin connector is wired right for vehicle and van.
Might have better luck with a specialist caravan transport mob, eg http://www.cbcinterstate.com.au/ (http://www.cbcinterstate.com.au/). There is also a mob who advertise that they will tow caravans anywhere for you, but can't for the life of me remember their name.
Or drive up in your own vehicle and you can sort out any wiring issues on the spot.

I worked for a company that had the Hertz Franchise in town - the only 4wd's that had a towbar were the Patrol, Pajero and Mine utes... nothing else in the fleet had them.
Now we were based in regional NSW, so when people got them as insurance replacements it was likely they would need a towbar for stock trailers/horse floats... metro areas might not even have anything with a towbar...

Now this is just a general observation.
I don't understand why people don't spend an extra $1000.00 and buy local. The time and effort in flying interstate, time off work, airport parking or having it floated to home doesn't make sense to me.

If you live in SA you would understand.
The prices here are way over the top even for a bone stock model that requires most things replaced or repaired.
I can purchase interstate including the cost to bring it back home the same van in better condition with service history with all the mods installed and ready to go for less than I can purchase here in SA.
To put it in a bit of perspective: SA purchase price $20K will require a further $5-$6K plus for repairs, replacements and mods. The same van interstate ready to go can be purchased and brought back for $21K

Which direction will you be freighting it if it's heading west from the east coast freight will be pretty pricy but if it's the other direction you may be able to get on backload which is loads cheaper.
