I'm looking at buying a pocket knife online and having it sent via auspost shopmate. Just wondering if anyone has had issues with customs in such situations. It's not a cheap knife and I'd hate to fork out the cash only to have it confiscated

Got a link or photo of the knife?
I know from other forum's that if it's in any way scary ("too" big, scary looking, auto opening, or anything else that a custom's officer might think "woh, hang on". then you may not get it through Custom's)

I brought a 30" gerber machete in from the US in my checked luggage few years ago. I declared it and packed it on top of my luggage so easily inspected. I didn't even get to the counter , the guy directing people at the customs queue looked at my form said "wow a big gerber" and sent me straight out . I have Also brought back tele sights gun bags and a 6" bear gryls gerber knife as well over time never an issue just declare. Can't see it being diff by mail?

is the price difference that much, from US to AUS?

I have bought several knives from the US without problem. Customs have good information on their website about what is not legal in Australia, Customs Officers enforce the rules, they don't get to make them up as they go...
Essentially, a "folding" knife is legal provided it cannot be opened with one hand with a flicking motion. A Spyderco folder for example can be opened with one hand, but cannot be opened by inertia acting on the blade by "flicking" the knife with a rapid hand motion, so they are perfectly legal. Ceramic blades are illegal because they can pass through X-ray machines without detection. Butterfly knives etc are also illegal, but if your just buying a survival knife, a good quality hunting or folding knife, you should have no problems - I never have I have imported numerous knives.
Edit: just saw the knife your referring to, Zero Tolerance ZT0804CF. There should be no issues whatsoever with that blade. I imported several Falkniven A1 knives, no issues.

The importation laws changed early this year and relaxed a little - I ordered an Benchmade Adamas folder from the US. It arrived with Aussie Post stickers on it and Boarder Security note on the inside saying it had been checked and they were happy, have a nice day.

As they are apparently available from Oz shops, it should be OK.
However ...
I also found reference to "might be legal to import but they are still banned on a state level if you look at specific states prohibited item lists, same with assisted opening knifes etc at last look"
Maybe have a chat with both Customs & also Police "Weapons" branch in your particular State
