Title: small nail gun
Post by: paceman on June 29, 2016, 08:55:22 AM
hi all,

i have a stack of old plywood and was thinking about making some storage boxes out of it.

i got started investigating nail guns (having had no experience with them) and was quickly confused... :)

i am looking for some guidance as to what sort of nail gun to get.  brad nailer? finish nailer?  what gauge?

i was looking at something like this (maybe, if i was on the right track):

https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-airwave-c1-series-air-brad-nailer_p6210563 (https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-airwave-c1-series-air-brad-nailer_p6210563)

maximum size of plywood would be about 12mm, but i also have thin plywood as well to use.  just want to be able to nail four sides and a bottom together.  nothing fancy.

any advice or ideas would be great.  if i haven't provided enough info, just ask and i will answer, if i can...

Looks fine but will only do up to a 32mm nail which limits what it can securely fix. This model goes form 32 up to 64 which may give some upper range, just depends if you want to do some fine brads

I have a fair selection of nail guns so I can always choose the right one for the job

i think a 32mm max is OK for me and my usage case (for now anyways... ), i can't see myself using it for anything more than 12mm ply...

what do you mean by 'fine brads'?

Fine brads are smaller nails which in my gun go from 12-25 approximately. The gauge of the nail is very fine and is good for fixing into the end grain and not splitting it.

If all you are looking at is 12mm ply with make sure you use same good quality glue and you should be fine. with a 32mm nail you will be getting around 22mm of hold depending on the amount it is punched below the surface.

Check out the one at supercheap. Bit cheaper and it does up to 50mm brads. I got the Aldi one which is identical. I got it for about $20. Does it's job well

Same here, it's a blue one.
For ply I'd grab a packet of staples for it though, they come in various lengths, but the longer the better. 40mm staples hold quite well and it can punch them in with some force, so take care where you hold the bits together.

If you use good glue then the nails are there to hold things whilst the glue sets.  This makes big nails a little irrelevant for the type of job you're talking about.
