Title: Road closure ratings.
Post by: Hewy54 on June 22, 2016, 07:28:28 PM
Heading up to the Big Red Bash from Adelaide on Monday. Working as a volunteer so have to be there on Wednesday.
The Govt website for outback road closures lists 5 ratings.
Open
Open with warnings
Open to 4WD  under 3 t
Open to 4WD and heavy vehicles.
Closed.
If I am driving a 2.96t cruiser towing a 1.7t camper do I fit into the category of 4WD under 3 t?

Dunno but I reckon by tomorrow it will be open to 4x4 and heavy vehicles..........it changes pretty quickly, have been watching the website for several days, we are departing Vic on Saturday to make our way to the bash.

Maybe ring SA coppers and ask? I imagine its their patch to book you?

Dunno.  But two friends just arrived at Birdsville today from Windorah, both towing vans.  So that route is already trafficable.

I rang Department for Transport a few years back and asked about towing when the roads are 4x4 only. Answer was go for it, the weight is vehicle only.

4x4 only usually means really slippery so towing will be interesting...

I sent an email to SA transport about a month ago for clarification as I'm leading a group up there, most towing trailers.
I asked about a 4x4 @2•8 and a camper of 1•2 for a total of 4•0 GCVM.

The response was prompt, in summary...
The 3 ton is the total of the vehicle or combination regardless of possible GCVM.
As explained the 4x4 would be OK but with the trailer on I would not be permitted to travel.
As long as when wieghed it must be the under 3 ton figure regardless of possible loads, ie; an empty tray truck.

I heard its $1000 a tyre if caught but have not been able to confirm it and haven't asked SA Transport.

Cheers Kyle.

I've "heard" $1000/wheel, including spares and steering.  Based on this, I'd cop a $10,000 fine!  :'(

It would want to be based on the mass before you left home. The mud built up can add an extra 1/3rd ;D

Contacted Dept for Transport and got the definite answer. The rating is for the GCM. If you are towing then DO NOT travel these roads unless open to 4WD and Heavy vehicles.
