We have had a backpacker leave their 2002 Ford Explorer here at Mt Barnett. They went through water and the car stopped. We have dropped the oil and put new oil in and the sensor on the dash warning oil pressure light comes on.
What recommendations are there to get it going.

A net search shows this model's oil pressure sender switch often fails prematurely compared to most, although perhaps the water has earthed it out. Try removing the wire to the oil pressure switch and the warning light should go off. Nevertheless you'll really need to hitch up a pressure gauge to check the oil pressure is OK. Otherwise it may be the oil pump hasn't primed and perhaps you need to pull the fuel pump fuse and crank it for a while to see if the oil warning light goes off. It certainly should within 30 secs or so if the engine fires but you don't want to take the chance with an oil warning light staying on.
We talking diesel or petrol here as I'm not familiar with them?

That used to happen to FIL's VN 3800 after degreasing and pressure washing. Threw the sender in the oven for a bit to dry it out and it came good (don't tell lovely :o).

Is it like this-

and note one commenter-
"lol being a ford fan and having owned a few Explorers and Rangers in my life I have had to do this a few time pretty easy to do and you are spot on about best way to do it. Don't know if it is true or not but I was told by a guy at the parts store the reason they go out is due to where ford placed them they catch a lot of engine heat which causes them to over heat and fail. I would bet that to be true too. I had a ford ranger that after replacing 3 of these on I used a piece of that flex exhaust tube to duct air to the senor area and never had the problem again."
PS: cross posted but GeoffA might have the answer and perhaps you know how to get at the sender now

The backpackers sat here , sleeping in the car, for 5 days waiting for a lift to broome. They left today. The cost to take the car back to Broome was $2,500. It was not insured. So they sold it to Luke with a heap of camping gear in it.

And all the while you were only thinking of those poor blockers that need their fruit picked?

All you need now is for the same thing to happen to a great hybrid..... ;D

I had to laugh another group of backpackers fueled up and their car would not start. Yes it was a ford explorer. They pushed it away from the bowser and had the bonnet up trying to work out what was wrong.
There were 4 of us standing nearby ready to offer them money for it. ;D
They then got it started, bugger.
