I am interested in how others carry LPG on their 4WD when travelling.
I know a lot on this forum are addicted to smoke from Campfires, mostly bigger the better.
Bad Scott and Bird rate mentions for Knockwood. Good one at Maldon too.
For those W/end. or short trips. Trips where it's impractical/not permitted to take a camper.
I am in the process of adding extra weight ATM, to the rear swing arm so I can carry a 4Kg. bottle.
Left room for 2, side by side.
Seeing how the LPG is not so friendly in an enclosed area. And I'm not running a ute.
Hoping you inventive lot can share.

Way too complicated, just tie them down on your roof racks with a couple of occy straps ;D ;D
-
9kg fits perfectly in a milk crate and easy to tie off to roof rack

I used to have a gas bottle holder and jerry can holder on a swing arm of my Kaymar rear bar. I altered the arm from a wheel carrier to that usage instead. Some people would say what if someone rear ended the vehicle, to me it seemed similar to a car lpg tank at the rear of vehicle and better then being inside the vehicle. Not sure of it's legalities, but I never got hassled by the law about it.

Trouble is not everyone has a roof rack on their vehicle.
I certainly don't have a platform or a basket on top of mine, just 3 Rhino bars.
-
I have a small stove that runs on these

Yeah, but some people need a decent size stove to cook a reasonable feed, they're not all sparrows like you

I travel with my gas bottle in a milk crate in the back of an enclosed ute with the fridge [ignition source]
When you think about it realistically there are 3 places the bottle will leak from.
Through the steel cylinder if its very rusty [note gas is wet so they rust from the inside, hence why they get tested every 10 years.
Past the spindle or shaft of the valve. [packing glad, stuffing box what ever you want to call it]
Out the valve as it may be faulty.
I have seen all 3 issues over the years, thankfully not often but more often as the swap & go thing started.
To eliminate most of the risk
Purchased a brass pol fitting plug from Gameco, chuck the useless plastic one how the gas authority thinks these can hold 200psi is beyond me, then again they did ok the canister cookers that blow people up.
Purchase your own bottle and get it refilled, at least you know it hasn't been sitting on the back of a trawler.
Only take a bottle that is under 5 years old.
Get some soapy water and splash it round the valve assembly before you travel.
If it leaks and explodes after that God didn't want you here.
As for an accident, above your head on the roof, in the back or attached to your trailer your in Gods hands again.

I have a 4.5kg gas bottle holder bolted to my roof racks for long trips, and for short ones I just tie it on.
I think you will find having fuel on the rear of your 4WD is not legal, in case you get rear ended

^ Correct. I looked into this when i went from a diesel to petrol vehicle. Legally in vic you can not carry a flamable liquid (not diesel) in a crash zone! Roof rack is ok.

So Your saying that water/inert/non flammable goods are the only substances allowed in a swing arm Jerry can holder on a rear Bar.
Is that right?
I know it's not allowed at the front of a vehicle.

Sorry, explosive... not flamable. Diesel is ok on a rear bar. (From what i underdtood) It is not classed as an explosive liquid.

Can you please point me to where it is stated that it can't be carried on the rear.

Thanks.
You will likely find it is "flammable". Which diesel is classed as combustible, which you see on a lot of fuel tankers.

Maybe I’m just too relaxed, but for the last 20 years I’ve always carried mine in the back of the wagon with the rest of the camping gear. (But if stopping for a long periods in summer I have been known to stay with the car with windows down or take it out)
When I get the bottle filled it goes on the back seat with the seat belt on it so it doesn’t roll around in an empty car.
