I dug our old Rays dual burner out the other day with the intention of binning it. Glad I was lazy and didn't get 'round to it.

There's a warning for the Coleman Camping heater that has been available since 1-3-15.
The one pictured is painted blue.

Product Safety Recall -- Danger of CO poisoning.
http://media.supercheapauto.com.au/bcf/files/user/recall_notice/Companion_Brands_Recall_Notice.pdf (http://media.supercheapauto.com.au/bcf/files/user/recall_notice/Companion_Brands_Recall_Notice.pdf)

Companion Brands is undertaking a voluntary recall of the Portable Camping Butane
Heater:  Models – Companion COMP243 (Available in various camping stores from 01.03.15.)
The model number can be found on the data label located on the side of the
appliance.
The manufacture date label is located on the inside of the gas cartridge
enclosure.

to public safety.
Hazard: Consumers may be at risk of injury or death from carbon monoxide
poisoning if appliance is not used in compliance with the manufacturer’s instructions

They also say "A replacement unit is currently being tested and finalised."
Does that mean there will be a CO monitor in the new heater.
Shutting down the unit when oxygen levels get too low.
Or CO detected gets to too high a level.
It's just causing simple devices to become prohibitively expensive.
And how long before they discover the Butane safety device for Canisters, that is part of this heater, has the same problems as the portable stoves?

[/quote]wouldn't the flame go out if no/low oxygen or is my classrom chemistry out of date?

I've been camping with BadScott and seen him build a campfire big enough to use up oxygen for a 10m radius............and survived.

I don't know what the ratios are supposed to be, ok.
If the heater was in an enclosed space, CO would build up.
I believe that you'd go to sleep long before the flame went out.
Aldi had some CO monitors on sale along with Smoke detectors recently.
So can't be too hard to get a CO monitor that shuts off a gas supply.
Same or similar to keeping a flame alight on a stove top.
And KB has a point.
If they just enforced lack of Manufacturers liability when users did not comply with instructions, it would shake things up somewhat.
This doesn't mean that commonsense can go on holidays either.

Sounds stupid but I am starting to think the same way these days. We had another incident in FNQ a couple of months ago. Although I have been using these for years for picnics etc the seed of doubt would appear to be planted and I am hesitant on using them anymore. I know in some cases there were incidents from people using them incorrectly but of late there are also stories of product malfunction. Not sure what to do anymore.

The new canisters have also been redesigned inside the lid, so if the do explode, they do it in a lot less violent manner than previously.

Just before Easter I bought a new Campmaster burner from Big W, so last night I checked the model number and AGA certification and both are the same which are listed on the product recall page as being a problem.

But the serial number on mine is different to the numbers affected, so I will take that as mine being from a different batch and okay.
