Title: Work Shop tool hire
Post by: DaveR on February 19, 2016, 09:15:11 AM
Hi Swaggers
Has anyone had anything to do with hiring out some work shop tools you own.
For eg, I am thinking that the good quality floor jack, chassis stands and transmission jack that sit under my bench could easily but earning me a few of these

I was thinking about putting an add on Gumtree to rent the lot out as a package for $50 over the weekend. To help a bloke out who needs to do a clutch etc.
Obviously a photo ID and deposit is required.

Has anyone done this sort of thing?

Never rented out any gear, though have let people borrow before and would be very warey ever to again [ people just dont respect and look after your gear ] ..
In the case of renting it, some might come to the conclusion your getting paid to replace it anyway, so they dont have to look after it . + if something fails or they do the wrong thing and drops a gearbox and transfer case on their head, it could be a messy expensive legal battle .. .

Dave

I have actually seen ads, here on the Coast, for full workshops to be hired out over the weekend, complete with hoist etc, so you can go in & work on your car properly.

With your gear, I'd be worried about getting it back damaged (hard to do but not impossible if you're an idiot) & also the insurance implications - I did everything right but his jack collapsed, damaged my car & hurting me, so I want $1 million  >:(

Nice idea but could see it ending badly  :'(

PS Edz was a bit quicker off the mark than I was - something there about great minds!  ;D

Hi,
For a bit less profit and a lot less worry, aproach your local hire place to do it for you.
Cheers

I wouldn't do it without proper insurance package, test and tag on all items, proper hire contracts with liability waivers etc.
Big potential legal downside if some untrained numpty hurt's or kills themselves by dropping a car on themselves.

OK,
Done,
I aint doing it.
Thanks for the collective wisdom guys.

I've been through the pain of lending tools to so called MATES in the past that cost me.
Well at 1st it did, then I made my debt collections later if ya know what I mean.   ;D ;D

Then there's the income tax side of things to consider.

Daddy always said there are four things you don't lend,

Your car
Your lawnmower
Your tools, and
Your wife

........ in that order.

A year or two ago I leant out my core drill.
I now need to use it but it seems I leant it to someone I don't know. >:(

If I ever lend tools out again you will require 100 points of ID, you will be photographed holding said item and need to pay a bond for a full brand new replacement plus a slab. If you damage it you own it, if you lose it you own it and I'll prolly punch you in the guts before you leave with it cause I know your gonna return it late. ;D :-*

Isn't that dreadful.
I can't imagine a society where bribes of Tee shirts of beer are not in the work place......
