Title: Ducted Aircon Barrel Fans ...
Post by: latestarter on February 11, 2016, 02:36:21 PM
Here's one from left field.
I have a Panasonic ducted aircon system in my home ... been here since we purchased in 2007. Anyway, one of the 2 duct lines stopped supplying air flow. The short story is that there is an electric motor with barrel fans mounted either side of it and one of them was basically cactus. The fans are plastic and cracking and the spline was chewed out so the shaft was spinning but not the fan.

Anyway ... Panasonic say they no longer have spare parts. Fortunately, the repair company has sourced some second hand ones, but the alternate is ..... replace the whole box and dice ... the whole system. I can't believe it !! These fans would cost two fifths of FA to make and I'm told because they are no longer available, I'd have to install a whole new system. Surely ... I mean ... surely, there has to be some way of just replacing the fans. Could I get something made in metal perhaps ??

At the moment I'm out of trouble ... but fitting second hand parts is a stop gap measure .... who knows how long they may last.

Anyway .... would love to hear from anyone who can offer ideas.

The model of the Unit is CU-A43BBP8 and I live in Sydney.

EPOXY putty  is your friend, about $15 at an auto store or an $8 pak of Araldite or even a bit of liquid nails out of a tube into the spline area and reassemble and let it cure for a day or so ..
Slight bit of cost and a bit of time who knows could buy you a year or 20 years before it ever fails again, if it ever does at all .

can you not just put a new fan (only the blade bit) onto the old motor?

Try "NLC balancing" at Eagle Farm Brisbane, they fabricate up some new fans for things now and then, and they may know where to find off the shelf similar items, if you have the old one as a sample i'm sure it won't be a major problem.
Tell them Mark from ABB put you onto them. No affiliation, we just use them for some really small stuff that's to light for our balancer.

Before you go getting something manufactured, try "Heatcraft" they have a stack of aftermarket stuff that you might find something that will fit.
