Howdy Swaggers,
So I watched the Superbowl yesterday (first time watching a full NFL game) and have a few questions hopefully someone can answer in laymans terms please
Why does the receiver call for a fair catch and not take the chance to run for metres.
How come sometimes there is two passes, but the second pass looks to be flat or behind the next player (like the NRL ie not forward) and can it only happen between certain positions.
Why do they run out of bounds and not step back inside to try and get around a defender.
Why after one of yesterdays touchdowns did Denver then do another play and cross the line again.
Is the punt their version of 5th and last.
that's it for now

1. calling fair catch - opposition not allowed to touch them. If opposition closing in fast and receiver thinks no running option is a good call. Always chance of getting smashed and ball popping out. They mostly run if have space, but that didn't happen much in yesterdays game.
2. not sure
3. running out of bounds stops the game clock, which may be useful depending on stage of game or if in front or chasing on the scoreboard.
4. conversion is 1 point, the touch down conversion play gets 2 points. They did it yesterday to push score out to be 2 converted touchdowns in front
5. yes. Must gain 10 yards in 4 downs to retain possession. If 4th and short (say 1 yard) they may go for it, but if don't make it turn over at the spot. If 4th & long mostly they will punt to push play downfield.

NFL is ALL about statistics. Statistics can make you look good, or bad. If a punt returner is not 100% confident of catching the punt and gaining ground without a fumble, he'll call for the fair catch. He can't gain any yards, can't gain poor stats either. A well timed and placed punt will hang in the air long enough for the attacking team to apply pressure on the PR and his blockers. If he's worried about a fumble or being smashed, no blockers to defend him, he'll call for a fair catch. The ball is called dead and play resumes from there.
Only one forward pass per down is allowed.
Once out of bounds, the clock stops.
Didn't see the game.
Pretty much, yes.

NFL is all about making the 10 yards and a new' 1st down'. Its armoured chess and possession is the key. Safer to take a fair catch and then start a set piece than risking losing the ball in a tackle. Same as running out of bounds. If they've made the 10 yards, stop the clock, give the attacking team time to reset and make a call on the next play.
2 - you're allowed one forward pass per 'down', but as many lateral (or backwards passes) as you want per down. No restrictions on who can do it. So they could play like rugby but again too risky as unlike a forward pass, if a backward pass hits the ground or an official, play continues and either team can retrieve it. So they rarely do it. Also the helmets don't give great peripheral vision. Safer to take the yardage, reset and try again. In discussing NFL you only need to remember one thing. The game was invented to make soccer look good.

The day it was televised ?(all day it seemed) I managed to manoeuvre through the smoko room almost unannounced, it seemed everyone else in the room bar 3 were texting someone out of the room, my eyes fixed on the fridge, ear plugs jammed tightly into the ear canal to drum out the repetitious Southern drawl, of J.R Senior, J.R Junior & J.R Jimbob "the commentators", until their pitch changed up a scale as a player managed to gain a metre (that's a yard to "you all young folk"). So sadly all that knowledge will be lost by the time the Big Bowl rolls around again next year.
Fraid I caint git inta thet game, Like most real sports persons and I don't mean to offend anyone, but I prefer the real football where they tackle and don't stop to watch their own commercials or take time out and swap places with each other, "cos they fergit how ta defend cos they is offenda's ... just havin fun wid ya
gotta luv being an ozzie

I really enjoyed the game. It was a very defensive one but that is similar to NRL GF here in Oz.
What I do love is the spectacle! From the national anthem to the half-time extravaganza... it is all USofA!
If only our codes could produce anything within that sort of ball park we wouldn't cringe when half-time comes on grand final day!

Since starting this thread I actually went to a game in November. NY Jets v Buffalo Bills at MetLife stadium. Really enjoyed it. 77,500 people for an 8.30pm kick off on a Thursday night. Crazy considering it was around midnight when it finished then you had to get home.
