Title: Rustproofing using Fish oil, brands and types?
Post by: Black Diamond on January 06, 2016, 03:52:41 PM
Gday Swaggers
The old 80 is starting to get a few spots of rust especially around the tailgate window so looking at stopping it from progressing too much. It lives outside so thinking I need to knock it on the head.
It's no show pony and rust is inevitable but slowing the process is my main objective. Bit late as some of it has progressed but I'm slack ;D
The old tried and trusted method of fish oil comes to mind, haven't really used it before but also looking to do the same to the CT. Question is are the cans you buy over the counter adequate? Brands people are using? How often and how liberal?
Is it a matter of just point and spray using a nozzle around jams and window seals etc.
I know a couple of panel beaters but I'm more interested in real time  feedback.

What's the best way to tackle this rust in this pic?

Cheers in advance

Glass out and know it on the head now BD. You can try rust convertors etc but if it was mine I'd fix it properly.  As for rustproofing the body I'd use tectyl from valvoline. It's a waxy residue and sticks well.

Cheers for that mate, yeh glass out is the go for that section. Will give it a go at repairing it, any suggestions on the best way to get rid of the rust and what to use?

Try Ankor Wax .
Google it , but they use it in the Antarctic on equipment and ships / boats .

I've used it on cars , at present my 1969 valiant is due for a recoat - last done in 2008 .

It's is a thick wax and works well - can be buffed to a high shine if you like , I used to work for jaguar cars and have used a thick cavity wax in all my cars - one had to heat it to get it to flow ......

But as others have suggested it's best to fix it right , once . Then you won't need to do again for 20 Yrs .

The Ankor Wax can be purchased from bus n bug in Melbourne

Give the old pig a real good clean up get any repairs done ... [ floor covers / seats  out,  door / panel trims etc off ] inside and out check all the drain holes in sills / doors 1/4 panels under body channels etc are clear ,. Wash  / blow any dirt dust mud build ups out and let it dry proper ..
Cut up some foam wedges to block all the drain holes .. Mix up a batch of 60 / 40 Tectryl / diesel mix [ diesel helps run the tectryl up inside seams and leaves it behind to seal it when it evaporates ]  and spray it up into the door top frame channels [ use an extention hose and small 360* nozzle on the gun to reach  ] get up into the areas were the roof joins the side panels [ ANYWHERE THERE IS A SEAM OR JOINT ON THE BODY ] give it a good dousing .. Remove the wiper cowl vent panel and clean out the cowl drains and coat in there / up under the dash on the firewall seam too .
Undersides clean and spray inside any body chassis panel box sections that are accessible then a liberal top coat over all floor / undersides insides of panels / doors etc ...
Dont use to high a preasure as it turns the mix into a mist and doesnt coat real well .. you will be and anything you dont cover will be a sticky mess..  park over an old tarp for a  week or so to catch any drips .. Try to keep out of the rain for a week or so and "  DONT " forget to remove the foam drain blocks
I used a about 3ltr  of tectryl mixed this way to do a ford escort 2 door shell .ovekilled but did its job .

BD in the repair its self there is no end of rust convertor products that will treat the area, hopefully it's not too far gone and can just be repaired with paint and the glass back in. Tectyl is great and Edz application sounds the go.

I used Tectyl. The stuff I got was in a 4L tin and quite thick, so I thinned it out a bit with turps. Then filled a parts washer gun, parked the ute on the grass behind the shed and sprayed/fogged the inside of every panel I could get to, as well as down the inside of the chassis rails. You can see the oil fog rolling out the holes and drains, so I assume that there some coverage in there. Either way, it is better than what was there before I started.

I used the spray cans of Tectyl in the past. They do an OK job, but only when you can point the nozzle at it directly. It is a bit difficult to get the right angle on the nozzle so the stuff goes where you want it. I was doing a Suzuki Sierra, so pulling door trims off wasn't that hard, but on other vehicles it is a pain.

I know a guy that used a 1 and a bit meter length of that 5mm micro irrigation tube with the little plastic sprayers on the end. It was attached to the washer gun and fed up inside channels and the body work. His reasoning was that if a plastic sprayer fell off inside a panel it doesn't matter. They are not big enough to rattle and won't induce corrosion. He also restored Alfas, and if you didn't do something they would rust before your eyes.

The important thing is to get the stuff into the seams as that is where the water and gunk gets trapped and the rust generally develops.

I used one of these jiggers.

Yeh good one Scraps ;D. Although the 80 is no powerhouse on the blacktop, it's true colours are exposed when in low range. Let's see how well you can keep up on some harder tracks which I'm happy to take you on next time.
Now GAGF :P :P  :-* :-*

Maaaate, can recommend these https://www.couplertec.com.au (https://www.couplertec.com.au)

My cousin's sister-in-laws's mother's uncle has had one on his 80 series since new, and no rust whatsoever.  Save the mess and buy one of these

PS And for that bit of rust around your window, the best rust treatment I have found is freshly squeezed snake oil.  I sell it for $100/10ml.  Can offer a discount to swaggers.  Just use the code "CUMINSUCKER" at checkout

Nah, but I have a mate who does.  Maybe we can organise a myswag meet at his place.  Just need a small donation from everybody to cover the cost of grading the access road.

Did someone mention dot paintings. I have plenty plus they also stop rust. Just buy 3, cover the affected area with them, and the rust will disappear.
