Title: Stashing an ipad as a security device
Post by: The punter on December 23, 2015, 09:30:23 AM
I get a bit nervous leaving our camper un attended in the bush, so I'm considering rigging a stash point for my iPad v1 which we only use for music anyway as a GPS tracker. The cheaper prepaid data only SIM's all seem to be Vodafone or Optus though, anyone else do this for piece of mind?

better with a simple 3G tracker unit (from a member on here) or Satellite tracker (trip tracker) for example.
Both units wouldn't be more then about 300 and give you total piece of mind..

We keep one in the car and one in the van, both reporting location via satellite every 5 mins..

Problems with ipad -- not waterproof, fragile, limited battery life and if hidden under a steel camper body the reception may be limited.

As an alternative, look at take a look at the GPS tracking units they make for dogs now. They are robust, water proof, usually a week long battery and are small enough to attach to a dog collar, so quite inconspicuous. They have apps that can alert you if your dog escapes.... so if fitted on a camper, could detect if the camper starts moving.

Here is an example of one but there are heaps of them now. http://www.petbarn.com.au/pod-gps-pet-tracker.html (http://www.petbarn.com.au/pod-gps-pet-tracker.html)

And of course there are the products on here for tracking campers etc.

Cheers, I like the other ones but don't have the coin at the moment for it.

I don't think I've ever heard of a camper being stolen out bush ? While setup ?  Not saying it can't happen, but I reckon there would be more chance of your beer being stolen than the camper ?  :D

I don't lock any hatches or even the main door most of the time ( except caravan parks ) because if we are out bush, we are either near other campers or we are secluded so no one else would know we are there.

PM me your address and I'll send you our trial unit we had for members of this forum, and one other, to try before you buy. I'm seriously sick of people taking advantage of it, and me, so it's no longer available to try.

Over the next few days, I'll download the full version of the firmware onto it and send it your way. Just send me your address.

Merry Xmas
Shane.
