Title: New Swag. How do you use yours.
Post by: Cruiser 105Tvan on November 16, 2015, 06:40:52 PM
Just picked up a new, still in the wrapper, Swag.
I think I can justify being on this forum now.
I was referring to my Tvan trailer as 'the swag' prior to this.

Apex swag $179.00 from BCF.
Details are on the back page of the current catalogue.
'Boab outdoor' brand.
Rip stop canvas, full length ridge pole, 215x90mm. x 77mmHigh.
Full length opening panels on both sides with fine bug mesh, hope it stops sandflies and similar things.
Just have to get a ground sheet now, base material is same as rest of swag.
Poly tarp will do for a while, till something better happens.
60mm foam mattress inside, to cushion the lumps, and 10kg. all up.
Even had a 'very short life' carry bag, as well as a strap-handle on the binder straps.
It will only get used occasionally at this stage.  Have to see how it holds up.

Open to comment from others with similar or same Swag.

Cool, everyone needs a swag for those overnighters. I gave up on the ground sheet as it collects rain water and throw mine onto a stretcher up off the ground.

Thanks Scott, sounds great, even work indoors also.
Now I'll just have to work out if I can get the poles at the end to stay in place, while it's up off the deck.
Or see if it'll stay up without the poles.

That's why I put this up.
I wanted to see if others had good alternatives in putting the swag up.
Alternative ways of using it, with and without the poles, maybe?
Piccies would be eggsellent.

Swag on the left is the young blokes on a standard Rays outdoors stretcher. The one on the right is mine on a Darchie XL100 strecher.

Both swags are Oztrail king singles. The ridge pole would make it easier without needing the end ropes to hold it I would think.

Thanks Guey,
Great setup.
The Boab Swag is a little different.
There is no hoop to keep the swag up, it's just like an old A frame hiking tent.
That's why I was interested in what others have done.  I'm sure there's a way, I just haven't found it yet.

Compared to the bikers swag also on special for same price.  The Apex swag is double the density of canvas.
Hopefully it will last and be enjoyed for a lot longer.
The bikers swag has supporting hoops, similar to your swags.  Lending itself to sitting on stretchers, more easily.
It was the full length flap cover that drew me to the Apex swag.
Being under cover, and still have the ventilation.  Without needing a structure over the top for shelter.

We have the double swag from kulkyne which has end hooped poles and a spreader type pole up the middle on the outside to keep it open.  As with any canvas products make sure you season it well.  We just set ours up with a tarp underneath and have used it for overnight trips camping and when we stayed at a friends engagement party.  It is big and can be a pain to squash in the back of the ute but happy with it.  I have a pillow top mattress cover in ours keeps it a bit warmer in cold weather and comfy.  Obviously if you roll it up with this in then it is bigger again.

I've gone off my swag in favour of the Blackwolf tent..
At least then I can stand up and get changed in weeing rain in the tent over swag. With my bung leg, it just makes life that touch easier.

Sorry mate, clicked on a link to the territory swag instead of the apex and thought it was similar. :)

I'm not much help. Have had a standard, plain swag since I was a little one for sleeping in at cattle shows and rodeos. Have been doing this for ever. When hubby and I were showing together we used his king single. Our son has now moved into my original swag.
Now we put the van on behind the truck and it is awesome.

If I am showing with school kids I take the swag and usually camp in the cattle stalls. Had to laugh at some kids with 'flash' swags like above trying to camp in the sports hall at a major show recently. They were trying all sorts of things to keep the supports up. Most ended up tying them to two or three bags lumped together.

I have found along the way two old 'shearers' beds that I also use under the swags now. Just being off the ground that couple of inches makes it more comfy. Only works for one person in the swag though.
