So Santa is bringing us a Winegard antenna and TV/Dvd combo for Christmas...just in time for the school holidays trip...Considering 21" to be best size, just not sure on reliable/value for $$
Any feedback/avoid advice would be great...
I note there's a fair range in price online across different brands...and certain ones claiming fame as specifically for RV travelling (handling bumps whilst travelling???)
Thoughts please...

Was just thinking the same thing as well yesterday...will be interested in the replies also.

this is my unbiased opinion
in the past i have had
majestic tvs
sphere onyx and crystal
Rv media
i was unhappy with all these brands and swapped over to Axis and i am very happy with them

2 year warranty
very light (compared to all other brand that i know of)
all the standard features + some
low power draw
240v adapter included
work from 10v-15v approx
and in two years i've had 1 x warranty claim (dvd would not eject)
not badly priced
my second pick would be majestic tv

We have a 21" Kogan we've had it for a couple of years now and it has performed well both in the soft floor and now in the Expanda. We use it with satellite dish and decoder when out of town and powered ariel when in close, for what you pay the picture and sound is fine but I cant comment on the DVD because I haven't used it ;D Oh yeah and you need to buy a 12V power cord separately as they don't come with one.
dales133 do a search on their smart TV's before you buy mate I was going to get one for my room at work (I work FIFO) but when I had a look around the net it would appear that their smart TV isn't all that good.

Thanks for the feed ba k.
Im a little way of neededing one yet so ive onlg done pretty basic research
-
We use a 24" Kogan 12v, 10mths now so far so good.
We only watch movies from thumb drive(32g max), set it up probably, 3 times in the last 10 trips.
Sound was bad so we plugged in our Bose sound dock, much better.

This might cause a riot.....but here goes........Camping and TV'S....?? :-[ :-[ :-[.
Just my opinion......Just love bush televisions.....
Cheers Tracker.

I intend to use mine for wotk and long trips,be worth having for the money
-
Do not buy a teac. I've had 2 stuff up in 3 years.
-
We have had a sphere for around 4 years and admittedly it has seen very little use. But one thing I find is the sound is very tinny. Could be just a small tv thing?
Picture is ok though and dvd works fine.
It stayed in the camper full time for the first couple of years, and I just put it on the couch face down for travelling without issue. Ended up taking it out as 90% of places we camped we couldn't get reception.
I think it has been taken once this year. I wasn't missing the footy finals :)
If we were to be doing a week in a caravan park at the beach it would definitely be put in. Nothing wrong with a couple of creature comforts while holidaying.

I second Dales133
We have a couple of Kogens in the house (family room and our bedroom) both TV/DVD combos and they have been faultless over the last 3 years. The family room one especially cops a flogging from the kids.
I'm also looking into TV setups for our new Mountain Trail and am interested in how small the wineGard antenna packs up for travelling?

a tip for those considering "smart TVs".
the software is built in. Yes... you will be able to get a couple of software updates. But seriously, how many "free updates" do you think the TV manufacturer is going to factor into his profit margin?
I did a lot of research before buying and eventually bought an Apple TV for the "smart" aspect and a cheap Aldi 58cm HD for the lounge room. The Apple TV will get software updates for years to come.
And by not buying a "smart TV"... I saved $$$
other line of thought... TV with built in DVD player means that the entire unit could be stuffed by just the DVD playing up. We always buy budget $29-$49 DVD players that can be replaced cheaply if they fail.
Worth considering.

It's quite feasible that some people on the forum could be on the road for many many months at a time. I got no problem if they want to watch the news, or put on a movie from time to time.
Each to their own, they don't need our "approval" to do something that you may not personally like to do.
Just commenting, that's all ;D

Kogan always worked

oh and one more thing regarding the DVD thing...
sooner than you think... DVDs will go the way of CDs and cassettes (yes... and even 8 track)
We now convert all our movie and TV series DVDs to digital and store them on our ipad. They can viewed on the ipad, but also...
The ipad can be connected to most modern LCD TVs as used as a media player. Takes up a lot less space than a bunch of DVDs. (plus almost every DVD you buy nowadays has a free digital download included)
-
If you are looking at a tv get one with a usb input. Then you can use those ripped DVD's just by plugging in a usb stick or an external hard disk.
-
Can vouch for the Kogan for 2 years and the DVD works well but if you want to use the PVR facility you're restricted to a 1 TB powered HDD or USB flash drive which we haven't used. Inherited a small LED monitor/TV with the Jayco as well as the Happy Wnaderer mast and powered Antsig omnidirectional antenna which works OK with the Kogan but I'm toying with getting the Happy Wanderer HW-DT8 aerial and their signal finder amplifier -

In any case I think a good 12v powered signal finder is needed on the road to sort out where the best signal is as well as whether it's coming in horizontally or vertically. Not much use having the best telly money can buy without a good signal.
Meant to say that HW-DT8 video looks impressive but anyone have experience with them?

My 2 cents:
1. DVD 'S will be around for a while yet, certainly longer than a cheap camping tv is likely to last. The money invested in blue ray development means the manufacturers will push it for as long as they can, and that means normal DVD will also still be available. So dont concern yourself with that aspect.
2. Had a Kogan 24" tv/dvd combo until my 4yr old son decided he could move it around the house and dropped it. The sound isnt great, but thats the same for all 12v tv's because the magnets that drive the speakers are what chew the power. I never had that much of an issue - what do you expect when camping?
Kogan you MUST have the remote to operate it as the "enter" button is strangely not included in the buttons on the actual tv.
And the dvd does not remember where you are up to if you switch to tv or turn it off - more annoying than you might think.
But overall i was very happy with it. I will get another, just waiting for another sale. $199 full price + delivery but they have sales where you can get them for $139 with free shipping. Personally i wouldnt bother with an extended warranty on such a cheap item.
One weird thing with the newer models is they only have 1 HDMI input whereas my old tv had 2. As i use satellite for reception this is a little bit annoying as i also like to watch videos from our handycam.
But far cheaper than sphere and does the same job.
Footnote: Adam, how much for the Axis? Website doesnt say which is always annoying. It wants you to set up an account before seeing the $ ehich means more email spam in future.

true point.
my reasoning was more storage and space. We already have the ipad for the Hema app. email, audiobooks and music. So it made sense to store many of our movies and TV shows on it as well.

I cant even remember what a dvd looks like its been that long since i used one so its not a consideration for me.
I was going to fill 2 laptop harddrivss, one with music one with tv programs/movies
-
Thats what we do. Just weight and space of dvds and cds v a usb stick makes it an easy choice for me.
-
I have to agree with meru and dales senriment re dvds.
No they are no more likely to become extinct than LPs (which are staging a mini resergence ATM) but tjats not to say they are pretty much impractical for a situation where vibrations and limited space are 2 factors. This ia also a contributing factor on why car head units on mechless form are becoming more popular.
With the availability of cheap bay trail or later ultra low power 12v supplied PCs available now a kodi box all the way for the smarts.
