Title: Attaching Space Cases to Alloy Roof Tray (Rhino, etc)
Post by: Colmano on August 19, 2015, 07:21:16 PM
Swaggers,

Just after some advice and hints on how people secure their space case style boxes to their roof trays ?? I want to be able to open it at short stops so don't want straps over top...Are the handles strong enough to tie down ? Or do people drill holes in bottom and secure to racks/tray ??

Just FYI I have a Rhino AT1910 tray attached to the Rhino 'Sportz' roof racks

Cheers
Colmano

On your tray you should have the retaining eye bolts inside where it attaches to the bars.
Use those eye bolts and a strong strap through the handles.
If it's a genuine space case they will be strong enough.
If not genuine then just check if they are strong enough

Mate just back from six weeks at the Cape with two space cases held nice and snug by there handles with straps. Nil movement and the contents water and mostly dust free. Pretty tough these cases!!!! Used some small keyed alike pad locks to keep the contents safe for the entire time.

Thanks guys...was considering using the eye bolts, hopefully they'll be long enough...

Disco - Can I ask what brand u have ? - I know the Pelican Space Cases are rock solid and pretty high end $ wise, and there's a few other brands out there...I know u get what u pay for, but for just a few trips a year, just not sure...??

Too easy mate, they are the proper Trimcast Space cases, I think Pelican bought them out, not sure. We have 5 all up of different sizes. We use them for recovery gear, food, clothes and spare parts! Your right, they add up to a substantial investment but they are tough and reliable, easy to hose off to clean as well.

Handles are fine.  If you have it tucked up against the sides of the rack you might get away with 1 strap each side.

As mentioned already, handles will hold it in place fine. I've had a space case on the front of our camper trailer for about 3 years now, held in place with some chain and turn buckles to the handles. Trailer did some pretty serious corrugations up the Gulf a few years ago, no dramas at all with the handles holding the case in place.

Brother-in-law used zip ties on last cape trip.....there was a single strap over the top holding tent and other bits aswell but once tent up, just the half dozen zipties held it in place....
I've bolted mine throught the bottom and used 50mm square washers to attach mine to a alloy roof rack(ECB). Been on there 3 years no probs.
