Wanted opinion on what AC unit to put in my Jayco Eagle. Have had a quote of $2500 for a roof mounted split system which includes a H frame for roof stability. This price doesn't include installation. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Cheers! GG.

Saw a Jayco headed up the beach on Fraser the other day, it had a small stand alone window AC unit mounted on the rear push bar venting into the main cabin .A mate got a similar small unit from the Good Guys for about $400 to fit to his caravan a few years back for a trip up to FNQ across to the Kimberley's, reckoned it worked a treat ..Only 450mm width, a 350mm height, and a 580mm depth and not overly heavy either

Have a chat to the guys at Aircommand in Adelaide.

They make aircon for all sorts of vans and RVs. We took our leaking aircon in to them, to find out the problem was it was not installed in accordance with the instructions. They seem very genuine people and I expect they would give good advice about what would actually work effectively in your situation. Eg, weight loading for the roof, capacity needed for the space etc.

We have a Hawk and fitted a roof top Dometic unit, I made the H bar out of steel RHS rather then aluminium, we brought the unit from the caravan and camping show at Dubbo, I can't remember the company name, but delivered to us it cost about $1900.00. I fitted the unit myself without any problems and so far we have used the heater more then the cooling side.

We had a Truma Aventa installed in our Eagle about 6 months ago. Not cheap ($2900 installed) but works great, particularly living in FNQ where sleeping at night would be down right uncomfortable without it.

Rockrat - did your Jaycos need to get a h fame under the air conditioner? I read online that the h frames are not post 2009 Jaycos.

Yes they needed to install a H frame. However, some variations don't need the H frame as reinforcing must be inside the roof - ones with the skylight off to one side as I understand it.

hi
factory installed air con has reinforcement frame .
Typically NO air no frame but u can order the frame be installed with no aircon [why would ya! ].
You can get those domestic portable aircon units around $800 Choice magazine have done reviews .
tomo
Ps look up Jayco USA don't cry 400-600$ factory fit

I can certainly pick up a portable air con unit quite cheaply second hand. but I they are loud, and have a big question about how well they work. Space is always at a premium in our swam. 2 adults and 3 kids. Still for me, the air conditioning would only be for a rare one - two week Queensland trip at Xmas 2016. Down CANBERRA way, a heater might be more useful.
