We have 3 thermos brand and they're terrific. I can give you a fairly new wide mouth Stanley unit if you want, great for cold water, that was once hot:D

We have 2 new ones, they are useless only keep water warm for a couple of hours. I contacted Stanley and they said they would replace them if we sent them back with the receipt, only trouble was the receipt faded in no time so you couldn't read it, so we have 2 useless thermos. We brought a Primus one from Bunnings and it is great keeps water hot all day and is still warm next morning.

i bought a 3ltr one from rays and it works really well. put boiling water in it and it is still hot 10hrs later. and because you push a plunger not open a lid it doesnt seem to loose the heat as quick as others ive used.

thermoses do fail. its the vacuum between the two layers that creates the insulation. once this vacuum is gone they no longer work.

I bought a 2 litre one from the reject shop for $15.00 and so far works a treat, keeps water hot all day.
I once bought a known brand and the salesman said it would keep hot stuff hot and cold stuff cold but when I put my coffee and an ice cream in there the whole lot went warm... ;D ;D

We have the glossy navy coloured Thermos travel mugs and I have just bought the 2l thermos based on how well the mugs perform.

I have had a steaming hot cup of tea 6 hours after I made it (with the preheat) in the travel mugs.

If anything they perform too well in the first couple of hours, good for the first cuppa stop on a trip though.

nay-dmax - yeah its there wild country brand. it is a bit bulky but it was pretty cheap and works well. Not sure its the sort of thing that would last 20 years like the "thermos" branded ones but it was cheap enough to try at the time.

Hi
The best thermos I have is a cheap Target one with a glass thermos un screw the bottom and fill the space between
glass and plastic with expander foam then quickly screw the bottom back on. Then you have the best thermos made
Glass keeps heat better and the foam helps and protect great for 4wding. Had a couple of tries at this first one broke

I filled our new 2l thermos yesterday at 10am.  I just emptied it now (was a test run).

The water I tipped out was 70 degrees celsius.

I know they are pretty $$$$$$$...this one was rrp $75, but I got it 30% off at the Myer sale last week.

I think it is the same series as jonesy's lunch one above.

Just don't get a tupper**** one because they are crap. Went fishing this morning with my thermos of hot coffee. Went for a drink less than 2 hours after making it and was barely warm. Thanks for the reminder. It is now in the bin.

Fishing was awesome by the way.

That's the key to keeping a thermos hot.

Every time SWMBO would make the thermos up the bastard would be cold by lunch time. She never used to preheat it.
Like Bird does, if you can preheat for 5 to 10 mins your on a winner.

Hi,
One trip I put our 'cheapies' in to gumboots, just because it was a convenient place to hold them till morning coffee time.
When I pulled them out, they were quite warm on the outside. Coffee was still hot, but it demonstrated the case heatloss that occurs.
Now we usually wrap the flasks in some clothing or similar as a bit of extra insulation if we want them reallyand hot for a few hours longer.
Try it, it may save replacing one that otherwise is not performing as you want.
Cheers

Ha! Good idea with the extra insulation/protection but you should have let the foam expand out the bottom and once set cut it back level and then screw the bottom on ;)

They are difficult to clean and leak if not reassembled exactly right.

Yep. Had a similar experience with a popup bath waste in a renter. Crap brass and it had corroded and broken off the cross casting support and dropped down and I thought  it might be a bath pull out. But guess what? Saved by the clever ancestors-
http://ezyfix.com.au/our-products/diy-bath-basin-waste-kits/waste-insert-repair-kit-50mm-chrome/ (http://ezyfix.com.au/our-products/diy-bath-basin-waste-kits/waste-insert-repair-kit-50mm-chrome/)
although the popup waste required their 40mm one

Those popup wastes are trendy pieces of crap too.

PS $19.99 for 40mm and $24.99 for 50mm at Bunnings if your chrome waste etc needs a spruce up

Tested the Kathmandu this morning and its looking good.

Put boiling water in it for 5 mins then tipped out and refilled at 9.45 last night. Checked this morning at 10 so a little over 12 hours and the water temp was 74 degrees which was plenty hot enough for a cup of tea.

After putting this thread up I ended up going to our local hardware store and being it was just before fathers day they had both the 1.8 and 1 litre on sale I purchased the 1.8 they said I could take back and change it if I got home and changed my mind on the size but ended up getting the smaller one as well, have used them many times since getting them and they stay hot for a long time have not had any leaking.  They are thermos cafĂ© ones by thermos.  We usually just take them and the coffee sachets, then don't need to carry milk as well. Take them on day trips in the car and to the footy.

We use a 12V jug on the road and you just plug it in 10-15 mins before pulling over for a cuppa-
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Car-kettle-12volt-/131869845337?hash=item1eb40e2759:g:XgwAAOSwxcRW8zM2 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Car-kettle-12volt-/131869845337?hash=item1eb40e2759:g:XgwAAOSwxcRW8zM2)
and the missus likes those funny sheila teas while I like my black coffee-
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/350ml-Double-Wall-Stainless-Steel-Tea-Pot-Plunger-Filter-Coffee-Press-Maker-Mug-/322033440627?hash=item4afab05773:g:Ed4AAOSwyjBW37nL (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/350ml-Double-Wall-Stainless-Steel-Tea-Pot-Plunger-Filter-Coffee-Press-Maker-Mug-/322033440627?hash=item4afab05773:g:Ed4AAOSwyjBW37nL)
I picked up that single SS one for $25 from Target(they have bigger ones) after eventually breaking a glass one which was always the problem dropping a vacuum flask too.
Pays for themselves pretty quickly and I reckon I could have sold plenty of coffee with the wistful onlookers smelling the coffee in remote places at times.
You need to install a separate fused cig socket for a 12V jug though.

Tested the Thermos King Travel mugs out yesterday. First thing you notice is that they are solid items.. They feel totally quality.
So with coffee yesterday - these things keep the water thermonuclear for 1/2 a day! Unlike the silver ones I bought from Rays few years ago..
I haven't really tested the leakage, but the drive to work there were no spillages, even after stopping at RJB for hour+.
The instructions were too small to read, so Hope there wasn't much to do to em but wash out and make coffee :) :)

Very happy

I have 2 x stanley 'vacuum flasks'.  One failed to hold temp after a year.
I contacted the distributor - based near Dandenong and they replaced the flask with no receipt required and no mucking about.  They even gave me back the screw cap and cup to keep as spares for the new one.

Great service.
