Title: Yours thoughts re a loan thread
Post by: feisty on March 17, 2015, 12:44:58 PM
Hello all.
Was thinking that a thread similar to Bird's brillant FREE GIVEAWAY THREAD might be a good idea. The idea being that is for items that members within the community are willing to loan other members free of charge (Although I'm sure a six pack changing hands would be encouraged)

Many of have gear around that we don't use much or is surplus to our needs but keep it just in case. This could be used as a one off 'lend' to secure something that someone could lend you in return.

You offer to lend something before you can borrow something.

In my case I have a one off simpson desert trip coming up and don't want to buy a sand flag that I may never use again. I would be happy to offer use of a 180w solar kit (or 2 slim 70w flexible panels)  or a lend of my satellite phone with sim for a month or so (on the proviso it was only for emergencies etc)

Does this have any merit. Feel free to shoot me down as long as you have a sand flag to lend me. Hey it's worth a six pack to you!

I think this is a great idea, so I will have a look around home to see what items would fall into the category.

Thank guys for the support.   Cement mixer is brilliant. Something most people rarely need and would rather not buy.

Add a compressor to my list also.

Also hoping someone might have a rim and tyre to offer.   To be used as a spare spare. IFS 100 LC 16"  would obviously compensate if used in action.

Sound like a good idea

The only rule i suggest so it does not get into a pissing contest in an open forum if someone does not return or breaks someone once a load is offered and accepted all details of the agreement and then via PM

Good suggestion.  One would hope that swaggers would be above that sort of behaviour.

very true ..but still

I was going to hire a compactor once it was $80 for the day or whatever ..then a bloke I know says ..nooooo mate borrow mine dont pay $80 so i do the right thing go pick it up and drop a carton off...

Then after 1/2 hr use the bloody thing packs it in and I knew it did not sound good ..so i then go hire the thing as I need the job done ..now I,m $40 out of pocket on the carton plus fuel ..

i drop said item back to owner who says "yeah its a bit old hey but has never let me down"

2 days later i get told i blew the motor up and its $400 to fix it ...

Now what do I do.....

I;ll let you all work out the answer..

So the point of working out ALL details is very pertinent and can save alot of hassles.

I agree with you jetcrew that these things can sometimes turn pear shaped.  Personally I would only offer things that were fairly robust  and don't mean much to me like the solar panels. The sat phone would presumably only be used for emergencies and would hopefully never come out of its case.    Hey and it's pretty hard to break a sand flag...

Mowers, mixers, cars camping gear or wives.

Loan it out and ya know its coming back Farked.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Unfortionatly some people's idea of taking care of lent gear isn't the same as everyone's.
In my experience lending gear more often than not ends up pear shaped

Hey guys I do get what you are saying.
But
Lending something is always going to be about risk management. Don't offer something up that is precious to you. Don't offer anything that is fragile (wives & chainsaws especially).
I'm not saying that once you offer something then it is free to be borrowed by all and sundry - far from it. You offer something up you get to borrow something once.
Of course you don't have to lend it. If a 21 y.o. in a beaten up jackaroo with his backside hanging out of his jeans turns up after only having made one post turns up to my house he is not getting anything....
As bird said in his thread it is about giving.
If someone says hey I've got a sandflag sitting around doing nothing and this feisty chap seems like a nice bloke and I would really like a 6 pack well that is a win/win situation in my book

Well I have 1 rule with someone borrowing, "You f#@k it, YOU fix it", unless ofc I honestly know myself said item is on its way out anyway

Yep, I've got 4 in the shed with Coopers STs mounted - about 75% tread.

Never lend nor be a lender. Or something like that. Maybe.

Maybe rather than offering up stuff, just post what you are after and hopefully someone can be of assistance.
