Title: Does Jules need to add a like button to posts?
Post by: cucinadio on February 14, 2015, 06:36:35 AM
Every post on the MySwag forum is a useful one, but sometimes it doesn't need comment, but it maybe useful and a simple like would be a great way to show it. So in the interests of mr and taking the pressure off Jules -   Does Jules need to add a like button to posts?

A very successful forum AULRO has had a "this post was useful" for years and it's a great feature to the site. But it's a democracy and you're entitled to your view and vote ;)

On second thought, can I change my vote to no. I'd feel the need to like everyone's posts so nobody felt left out, and that kind of defeats the purpose :-\

Ok,
So I did a quick look on the mods for SMF and there is a simple plugin which I've just activated. I'll leave it on for a few days if the concesus says we don't like it I can remove it with one mouse click. Easy uninstall.

Yeah the button colour is a little bright, and yes systems like this break other forums but let's see if it works for myswag. If not its gone. But it's worthwhile to try.

Cheers

Oh for the love of sweet baby bejeezus ... please tell me that every post isn't going to have a big orange flag waving about at the bottom. If we have to have a "like" function, what about placing it up near the quote one, or over in the bottom right hand corner ... and tone it down a little too.

While we're at it, lets even things out. Every yin needs a yang ... so how about dislike function, maybe displayed as a little steaming dog turd, known forthwith as the what a load of crap button ...  ;D

Great update Firefox, not sure I like the colour and "in your face" nature of the icon.

For what it's worth I reckon it could be a little less obvious, maybe sitting it the lower right corner of the post with the "report to moderator" link.

I did do the update whilst in bed this morning. But when I fire the laptop up latter I'll try and get into the styles and see if I can change the colour, I too am not a fan of the colour. Location might stay the same.

Colloquially "Cheers" (to mean "thank you") is used more than "Thanks." these days, just as in social media "Like" is used more than "thanks" [albeit due to its use as a tool to signify such in all manner of digital uses]

Does the choice of one or the other determined by its chosen use in a particular platform , differ in distinction, meaning or implication, or is this just one of those random things we should become rhetoricians over?  :-*

Not sure how it would end in tears? We use a like system on our other forum.  It certinly does not cause issues or the world to open up and suck everyone into a big black hole. It does save people posting stupid posts just to increase post count.  Oh hang who am I kidding. No it doesn't hahahha

Yep. I think the 'thanks' feature on AULRO is a great idea as you can acknowledge someones reply with a simple thanks without having to write a reply. Works well and you can see how many times people have been thanked vs giving thanks which is also handy.

Hate this button, the color, the size and the location.

If it must be, put it in the top right hand corner, next to the "quote" and the "dislike" button and make it unobtrusive, like the 'quote' button.

As some may have worked out I've ditched the like button. Trying to get the colour and location right wasn't going to happen, and based on some feedback I've shutdown the plugin.

Anyhow based on feedback I think the way thanks will be better. So I've managed to get a better plugin. You will notice the say thanks option in the top of each post in a thread. It's extremely unobstrusive and therefore shouldn't Impact people.

If you want to use it, it's pretty simple. Hopefully for those wanting to try the feature lets see how we go.

that's interesting. I can see in a post where I have liked/thanked someone, can you not see who liked/thanked you?

I like the thanks button, but think you need to add an "idiot" button, would use that one a lot more on here >:D

As usual Greg I agree with you.  I've already hit the "say thanks" button but in this case it loses the personal touch of communicating with a fellow swagger. No harm in having it, but if the post is by someone known to me I will most likely still type a response, like this ramble for instance.

I think the thanks button is a good addition, though not always relevant to each post.

But what i would like or maybe its there & i'm to dumb to work it out is that sometimes if i'm reading a thread on my mobile through tapatalk i will add the thread to "my favourites" if i like the topic or feel i want to add something to the conversation later, eg a picture. Now i havent mastered tapatalk enough to add pics whilst on my mobile, so have to do it on my PC, my problem is that whilst i have saved it a favourite on tapatalk, unless i have commented there's no list of my "notified" threads.
So i would like something added to the "my profile" section that will show my "notified" threads that way if i want to add a comment later from my pc i can find the thread. (and yes i do forget thread topics on a regular basis, early oldtimers i believe the doctor said  ??? ???  thats why I hate passwords  :'()
