Penny and I are looking at doing something different and will be applying for a couples job in running a retail store in Arnham Land.
Looking for an adventure and a chance to make some good money.
Has any one ever done this and the good and bad of a job like this.
I understand these places are not paradise and I have been to plenty of places like these in my travels but the unknown and the sense of adventure and doing something different is very appealing. You only live once ;D
We may not get the job but between us we have plenty experience in this field.
Look forward to your replies.

If you haven't got anything to lose then why not go for it? If it doesn't pan out, just think of all the spare time it could give you for planning more of those famous McGirr lead trips we all love reading about ;D

I worked for almost a couple of years on an air ambulance. Before starting I was looking forward to the sense of helping the community. After a short time I just became dispirited with the deplorable conditions in most communities, and the fact that so many of the patients we transported, were ill, either because of their own alcohol consumption, or their guardian's alcohol consumption.
In the end, I found it very dispiriting, and obviously not the job for me.
But good luck if you do it.

An old mate of ours and his wife quit working a fulltime job for an early retirement / working holiday travel around Oz and went on the road with a 16' caravan.
Caught up with him a while back and they had been out on a decent sized Indig mission, running the store, reckoned it was a bit of an eye opener but they put in the full term they were engaged for and left with a very tidy amount in the bank at the end of it .
Reckons he should have done it 10 years earlier than he did .
Reckons he never wants to see another hamburger again though, due to the amount he made every day the shop was open ..
Last heard he was out on the islands in the NW gulf working for the NT Gov painting Gov / Indig buildings etc on a fly in fly out basis ...

Hi Mark,
My wife and i have run community stores an the APY Lands for 6 of the last 10 years. Sometimes you need a break from it :D
Next week we drive out for the last time after a 2.5 year stint. The eldest is pushing 8 years old, and that's old enough. The youngest will start reception next year and both girls have both had a great time. The experience and adventure for them has been priceless.
Are you applying to ALPA, Outback Stores or is it an independant?
If it falls through, i can head you in the right direction if central Aus takes your fancy.... i love the red centre and will miss it big time.
Cheers

I have some friends living and working up there atm
The only advice they gave is to get a full medical before you both go. Unfortunatly she has had some issues that have involved multiple trips back to darwin which have been logistically difficult and unfortunatly they are cursing themselves as it would have been an issue picked up before they left
They reccomend
Full blood work up Cholesterol, Kidney function, liver function, full blood count, iron studies, calcium cardiac score if over 50
Blood pressure
Vision
Hearing
Feacal Occult Blood test, Colonoscopy and or papsmear if you are of that age and it will fall due when away
General skin check due to humidity and wet season any skin issues need to be sorted like exma and the like
Skin cancercheck at a clinic that uses magnification system (this is the one that got her)
It may sound like overkill but i do shake my head at some that will spend 2k on vehicle prep but not $300 on their own prep

They do request a medical check and police check.

There are a couple of people on the Overlander Forum who run remote road houses/shops. One couple has been doing it for years and another couple have recently located. If you want names so you can follow up I can PM

I think it depends on where you want to go up there, some communities are much better than others. I can certainly see you fitting in with the lifestyle.

We aren't in a community and pretty glad of it TBH. I had pretty good care from the FIFO midwife at the local medical centre last year while pregnant on the station, but hubby and four others had pretty common injuries misdiagnosed and had extra recovery time as a result. Make sure you're fit, well and healthy before you go in! We don't have anything to do with up there any more unless desperate. We LOVE living remotely....it's an awesome way to save and we also know we have most certainly opened a multitude of doors not just with the work we're doing, but the remote experience as well.
Good luck!!
Lil :)
