Title: Camping fridges with separate feezer and fridge temperature control
Post by: MarkVS on November 12, 2014, 02:01:31 PM
Does anyone know of, or can recommend a 240/12v camping fridge (lid on top) , approx 80L, with separate freezer/fridge compartments, and separate temperature controls for each ?

Thanks

I think although the evakool is dual zone it won't have dual controls.

Cheers

National Luna do a 90L, and a 72L that fits your criteria. http://www.nationalluna.com.au/Fridges (http://www.nationalluna.com.au/Fridges)

They are top shelf as far as quality goes, but they are also top shelf for price.

About $3,000 for the 90l in stainless (couple of hundred less for aluminium), and I think about $2,500 for the smaller one.

I have the 90L, and it has been flawless in it's reliability and performance (even when we were in the top end). Power consumption wise, it's comparable to the 60l Engle that I replaced.

I concur the quality is very very good and it has twin thermostats PM if you want a more realistic price ..one of my suppliers is the importer.

A mate on a trip had one and it was flawless in 39 degree days

It is just the eye watering price that gets you

Check these out for value!! I don't have one but at that price it's worth considering. Especially since its running a Danfoss motor.....

I have an Evacool IB 70. It is a 70lt fridge freezer with about 50mm insulation all round and between the 2 compartments which can be individually controlled by remote control. Have a look at there seconds, about $900. Barnray

We have the Primus one linked above.  Damn good fridge.

Had it on the cape trip this year, though you may not have noticed as it wasn't on your wish list then.

We have a little basket thingy we put in the 'big' side to put dairy etc in.  I think it is an engel one that happens to fit. We found it by putting other brand baskets into the Primus fridge at BCF.

We have the Primus Mammoth dual zone . Cant fault it.
It is very quiet when running and you can turn of one side of the fridge/freezer when you have little food or drink left at the end of trip.

Andy.

I have had the 100L Companion dual zone 70/30 fridge for 4 years and it's been awesome. I love it. I think they're a Primus fridge. Low draw and has copped a flogging. Bloody big and tall though.

I have the primus 92L and am happy with it.  Separate controls except that one compartment (near the compressor and controls) always has to be colder than the other.  I think that's a common arrangement.
The other 2 on my shortlist where the Evakool IB70/IB100 and the Giant 80L http://www.aussiebatteries.com.au/camping-caravan/portable-fridges/giant-power-80l-double-door-portable-fridge-freeze (http://www.aussiebatteries.com.au/camping-caravan/portable-fridges/giant-power-80l-double-door-portable-fridge-freeze)
I was put off a bit by potential warranty/support/return issues with the Giant.
The Evakool was fine except the dimensions didn't quite work for me (you get less fridge space for the same external dimensions).

The National Luna was simply too expensive.  Same goes for the Engel - which was also a bit on the heavy side.
Waeco - too small.
Other Evakools didn't have dual controls and/or had the wrong dimensions.

Get a National Luna, if possible...

They are the Rolls Royce of camping fridges.

I have the s/steel 90Ltr twin tub..

The compressor works on the (LHS) freezer side - bringing down the temp to what you have selected, then switches to the (RHS) fridge side - and cools that...

You can run both sides as fridges - or do the freezer/fridge combo...

They are a much better system than relying on a plastic baffle in the middle of the internal space to deal with the fridge/freezer combo...

The units have low / medium / and upper volt presets that you can select - that the unit will drop out at - once your batteries reach that voltage.   (Good safety features to preserve the batteries).

The 90Ltr unit sucks about 4.5amps/h; but with cycling - may only drain approx 20a/hrs per 24hrs.. +/- ... tba

With 230Ahours of quality batteries in use whilst free camping - after approx 30hrs of running the fridge/freezer combo ... then fridge fridge combo... our volts were at 12.65vlts.. (90%)  ...(On that trip, we were not using the batts for anything else...)..

The interior has several really useful bins, and a LED light.

We use ours 24/7 at home on 240vt as another fridge...    Plus with such as investment - its kinder to have the thing operating all the time vs. only for a few days on a few camping trips, per year...

Hi All

I've been looking into getting a fridge / freezer combo and found this old thread.

I don't really like the idea of setting the freezer temp, then the fridge side just gets what coldness is left, ( as per the Waeco and Engel).  I have seen some comments that when the freezer side is full, there is not much cold air flow getting to the fridge = warm beer.

All that led me to the Giant fridge /freezer which has 2 separate controls.

http://www.aussiebatteries.com.au/camping-caravan/portable-fridges/giant-power-60l-fibreglass-portable-fridge-freezer (http://www.aussiebatteries.com.au/camping-caravan/portable-fridges/giant-power-60l-fibreglass-portable-fridge-freezer)

They look ok on the adds but I haven't actually seen one.

Has anybody tried these?

Cheers

It actually works the other way around with an overflow fridge. Empty or full they will do what they are suppose to do, but when full and down to temp they run much more efficiently. Cabinet temp fluctuates mildly. I can assure you the beer is always perfect with the thermostat set on 4 in my evacool rf60.
Unless I had a specific need I dont see why I would change to dual control.

Its been excellent, good on power and well built. Uses the well proven secop (danfoss) bd50 compressor.

In my experience that is not what happens.  With my Engel you have to be careful what is touching the metal plate on the fridge side, if the freezer is turned all the way up, anything touching that plate freezes as well, even though it is on the fridge side.

Totally agree Symon.
Let's not forget Engels are 'chest type tubs', far colder in the bottom than near the top.
