Nagambie Mens Shed has been incorporated as its own entity with 18 members over the last 12 Months . lts exciting to be a part of such a movement that's growing & becoming a part of mens life .
Who else is part of Mens Shed ??? :cup:

Not trying to be rude (on purpose :D ) but isn't there an age requirement for the men's shed?
-
I emailed highton men's she'd 12 months ago and nobody ever got back to me.
Been through some pretty tough times as a male involved in a step family.
Based on my experience they are either a closed shop or worthless .
Not what I was expecting looking at the parant site.
Don't get my vote if thier government funded based on that
-
I am not involved in a mens shed since I am not a man however the local one here is fantastic they make lots of nice wooden things like furniture and wooden plates for display and other things and the men who are involved just have such great things to say about their time there and how good it is.

agree they do a great job in the main. Thinking I might get involved in the one here in a few years when work slows down a bit.
Reckon I've got a new product they could make.
Aussie Timber wheel ramps and chocks.
-
Might be a worthwhile venture Scarps.
Till someone gets a hold of a set, ships them to china and retro engineer them,Import thousands and claim Australian made from local timber then might even try selling the re- assembled rebadged originals on Fleabay ... ;D
But who would ever do that ....

Age Requirement , Mostly a heart beat & at least warm & your in . :cup:
lt a really great way to connect with the community & other blokes as we tend to isolate ourselves as we get older . Making new connections can really help to live a happier life .
rude young whippersnapper :-* :-*

So, what exactly is a "mens shed".... ???
-
My father is involed with one.
He joined up to get a mate involved in something after he lost his wife.
He was very hesitant to start with but spends up to 3 days a week over there now.
Mum loves it cause it keeps him out of her hair a bit since he has retired.
He does say there are a lot of old women there though. Not sure what he means by this as it's a mens shed...

Really just a place for blokes to go and mingle with other blokes.
At dads shed they have metal work gear, wood working gear, computers and stuff that you can learn to use or just use.
They also go out and help in the community.
Being an ex builder, he has gone out with a few other blokes fixing fences and stuff for people that can't afford or just can't do things themselves for whatever reason.
There was also a heap that went to Bundaberg a while back to help restore stuff after the floods up there.

The way I understand it is it's a constructive social blokey support group without booze that also creates/builds/teaches others. Not enough is being done in this country to support men's mental health or awareness!!

I have spent the last 4 1/2 years getting St Andrews men shed going
We now have a brand new shed and lots of gear to go in it
We have all so started a youth mentoring program with the local schools and theater group making props and getting the kids involved
Our youngest member is 17 and the oldest 75 and have about 35 members
Some like to make things some just like the company have a cuppa and read the paper
-
....and that's^ what it's all about....
-
Sounds like paradise....until the left wing lesions make it compulsory to have women join.
Maybe we should join th CWA. ..o

Mens sheds have been going for a long time without forcing them to have female members I just hear such fantastic things from the local members of our mens shed and how great they think it is I think they are fabulous

Bowen mens shed has been going for about 31/2 years. Has regular mens health presentations, last one was on Dementia and the previous on Bowel cancer. Youngest member is 26 and the oldest 90. Meet 3 times a week, Tues Morning, Thurs arvo and Saturday morning. baz

When the boys get together the chat can go anywhere . We had a chat last week about how heavy some of the members are ,, 145KG was the biggest . He has trimmed down though , so he said . We all felt comfortable enough to talk about it :cup:

Worth a bounce...

Nagambie Lakes Mens Shed has just moved into our New Shed , on our own block . We are assembling our new wood working toys & arranging them in the shed to be as productive as possible . lts great fun watching people learn new skills . We have been doing handy man jobs around town for other local groups . The Crochet club , Bowles & Tennis club All Good :cup:

sadly our local one is fairly useless.. only open 10-2 few days a week .. stiff Shit to you if you work. Or maybe I have the whole concept of these joints wrong.
Would have been keen to go down and do some woodturning or something interesting

Before PC, we use to call it the pub.
Great feed, great perve, have a flutter on the gee gee's, game of pool or darts with YA mates.
Now we are told we need to discuss our feelings.....
-
I went for a visit to our local mens shed 2 years ago with the intent of joining. After listening to half a dozen whingers raving on about how 2 sheets of sandpaper had gone missing(this was brought up at a general meeting)...I decided I wasnt senile enough to cope. Mrs asked how I went and I told her that when it comes time to make a pine coffin I,ll go back...Good for some...just not me.

my guess is it'd be much like many other types of clubs, some are better then others, even though they are supposably the same things at different locations. It all comes down to the people involved with running the place, as to what each location is like.

Agree with that Rummy.
A few years back I went to a 4WD club meeting, with a view to joining. I left half way through ::)
I wouldn't lump all 4WD clubs together though....
-
l wouldn't join a Club that would have a Bloke like Me >:D
-
So that makes you the one & only member of Nagambie Shed, Speewa ???
-
I've been involved in one for about ten years. The first five were just fund raising and hunting for grants - we used to meet under a tree. We built a 20 x 10 shed, added a big kitchen, put in a mezzanine, then added another 15m, then a 40 foot container, then a big area for raised garden beds. We get 40 blokes most days we are open, with a membership of about 120 and most events are booked out (dinners, Xmas, boat cruises, visit to car museum etc). It is astoundingly successful. We try to get by with a minimum of rules. I used to joke that sheds were started by women with the main purpose of getting men together so a doctor could come and talk to us about prostates (yeah, that happens too). One of the best comments "women talk face to face, but men only talk shoulder to shoulder", referring to mens reluctance to discuss problems. We've had about 5 funerals, have taught lots of fellas how to cook, rebuilt a dragon boat for the breast cancer ladies, and its a very welcoming and social place to go.

When I was unemployed last year I spent some time at the local Men's shed. Good bunch of blokes of varying ages and abilities. I learnt a lot and really enjoyed myself.
-
All Mens Sheds are different , sometimes it not what you expect or want . There will always be something happening that could interest you . Or you ask about a subject the interests you & then follow it .

I asked them stuff when they had a stall at Bunnings yonks ago - they were doing some woodwork there and then thus why I asked about it.. I reckon it would be really kewl to do. They were only doing simple things like cupholders, making pencils etc... but like bigfish I think our local would be only all old retired fogys - certainly with the hours they are open it leans that way.
but as Geoff said, they cant all be like that or they'd all close within 1 hour and disappear like a fart in the wind.
