Is it worth buying an expensive CT to take around Oz as it will see a lot of abuse?
Would it be better to buy an average/2nd hand one, do the trip then sell it and buy a good one for the rest of our camping life?

Depending on what your CT req's are, I'd grab the 2nd hand Trackabout in the FS section.

Only downside might be you will fall in love with it and keep it post trip also:-)

If you can afford to take a new one on a lap do it!
If not there are some great second hand ones around.
We did our lap with a 5k second hand camper and had a cracking time.
It all come downs down to budget and where you want to tow it etc, you might need a more robust set up that you can trust rather than a second hand one that might have been neglected.
Our camper was just like new so I could trust it and we towed it everywhere.
Good luck with your choice.

The money you save by buying a second hand camper can be added to your trip budget to buy more experiences.

Personally after taking a new one i would go second hand with a BIG butt
You want to buy the trailer and get used to all its ins and outs 6 to 12 months before you go. It is the same with a vehicle i would never take an unfamilar one that far
You want to get to a stage when you hear a rattle to be able to go yep that is a normal rattle or no that does not sound right and i need to have a look
