Title: Rare Earth Magnets (SE Melb)
Post by: Bird on August 26, 2014, 12:13:50 PM
http://www.carbatec.com.au/rare-earth-magnets_c20560 (http://www.carbatec.com.au/rare-earth-magnets_c20560)
Found this place today and the prices don't look bad and they have a few options...

and looking at their website...  "Please note that it is illegal to send these magnets by post because they pose a danger to aircraft. We will not post them under any circumstances"

Wonder how many ebay sellers realise this...

Yeah I bought some off fleabay recently, delivered by airmail from Peking. Didn't know they were illegal to post. We have a Carbatec not far from home so will be going there to get my next lot.
Thanks Lost

i believe they can be shipped via post, but they have to be packed properly:

http://aussiemagnets.com.au/pages/Shipping-and-Returns.html (http://aussiemagnets.com.au/pages/Shipping-and-Returns.html)

i would like to see the ban documentation on rare earth magnets.  why can i get them via ebay?  what's the point of having the ban if you can still get them?

i have had many magnets delivered domestically and overseas with no issues.

but if it is as critical as they say about danger to aircraft, then how are they allowed to get on a plane?  also, what's wrong with road postage?

that link is about selling specific types of magnets, in specific circumstances.  we are talking about not being able to post them....

Read what those magnets do to mobile phones and stuff on the net. I'd believe the plane gig but maybe only in large amounts..

all they are doing is losing business for themselves...

I am only having a guess is that maybe they can be airfreighted just not in bulk and Aussie magnets may be being tight arses but i can blame them as it is sometimes cheaper to ship something in from overseas that it is to move from one side of this country to another

Magnets and thermometers have always been a no no on aircraft. The mercury in thermometers is extremely corrosive to aluminium and magnets can affect the old style aircraft compass.

Prices seem about 2 -2.5 times the price of same items on ebay. My ebay magnets parcels have always been wrapped in about 300 layers of bubble wrap.

My LED's are in aluminium extrusions, so I take it the magnet is glued onto the aluminium?
Beats the electrical ties I've been destroying at every camp!  ;D

30+ years ago I worked for a company in the UK which made float switches which contained magnets - when these needed airfreighting we had to pack the boxes in a special way on the pallet so that the magnetic fields from individual switches cancelled each other out, then go round the complete pallet with a gaussmeter to ensure that the residual magnetic flux at 1m from the load was within acceptable limits.

So you can airfreight magnets if you know what you are doing, but it's quite understandable why Carbatec won't (and why Australia Post won't accept them).

From page 14
D2.9.2 – Magnetised materials
Any material that, when packed, has a magnetic flux density of 0.159 A/m or more at a distance of 2.1 metres from any point on the surface of the package.
Some common examples
Some automobile parts
 Some metal fencing
Magnets or Fridge Magnets in quantity
