Title: Camera Gurus - Sony A65 and tamron 18-200 advice.

Hello gurus.

Is a grand a good deal for this combo? What should I offer! I have heaps of old Minolta gear that could cross over, including a fish eye I am keen to use again after a 15 year layoff!

Should I go this option, or play safe and go Nikon or Canon?

I went Pentax, yes you have to purchase lenses special for the mount, bought a wide angle sigma 10 to 20 for under $500.(mounts are ALL forward/backward compatible)
Batteries are 4xAA (Eneloops last well, 500+ shots) buy anywhere
Mine is the kx, body is about 2/3 size of the canon equivelant I'm still learning ( yeah I know)) how to use it , but when I get it right I have absolutely fantastic photos, so it's not the camera

I left the big Canon behind and went for an Olympus. Image quality is awesome, super fast autofocus and shutter release and you can use all the old lenses with the right adaptors.

I dont know much about the Sony cameras as Im a Nikon fan.
But I have 4 different Tameron lenses and they are fantastic and so much cheaper than Nikon lenses.

Yes agree about the Tamrons, and have used a Sigma 100mm Portrait lens previously with good results.

Still waiting for my tax return before I try and wrangle a deal  >:D

We have the Sony A55 and love it.

I looked around for a long time and found it to be the best value for money with the features it came with.

I got a electrical store to price match an online price as well.

Thanx for advice, found a nice low frame count Sony a37 at cash converters of all places!

18-55 and 55 - 200 lens kit. Knocked down to $300.

I like the concept of the camera body having all the anti shake technology instead of the lenses.

Now to retrieve that camera case of Minolta Rokkor lenses I have stashed back on the big island... Looking forward to digging out the fisheye and the big 300 zoom that should be there. Maybe put all the Minolta bodies I have on display as museum pieces, along with the odd Pentax.

Grafy, checked out the Olympus, lovely camera.

Having just used a Fuji Finepix and now the iPhone for the past 10 years it will be good to get back into some real photography.

Thanks to those on here that keep posting up great pics in the photography thread for the inspiration.

Score mate, that'll serve you well. I absolutely love photography, not real flash at it, not much time for it, but it always makes me happy when playing with the camera.

Hi Mace,

Can't comment on the camera as I have never owned or used a Sony.

I have had a couple of Tamron zoom lenses on my Pentax DSLRs. Good value compared to "name" glass, and more than capable of great photos. The only downside that I can think of is the comparatively slow and noisy auto-focus...but nothing really to be concerned about.
