Title: GOPRO
Post by: broncos11 on June 20, 2014, 11:12:02 AM
Looking at getting my son early birthday present.
Which Gopro should I look at? White, silver black??
Should I look on fleabay for one that comes with 32G card and stuff???
Appreciate any advice. Will be used for fishing and surfing.

Unless he's going to be doing higher end production stuff with it i's stick with a silver. I have the black, but never use the protune or advanced modes, as I don't have the time to do any post production.

Hey mate, bought the hero 3+ black with the remote for work and then decided that it needed the video screen to make it easier to see the setup of what you are recording. I have used it for driver training videos. The remote control is good.

I would certainly buy the same for myself....

The silver 3+ has wifi built in, so you can use the gopro app (apple or android) to setup and start / finish.

I've found with the remote that I have the battery life of it is garbage and it runs out before the camera does.

Definitely a 3+ Silver or black .. I went for silver as it has a high enough resolution for what I want

I've been happy with my hero3 white. Don't have any real need for the extra. I use it for. MTB riding and as a safety cam while commuting to work by bike. Sure the silver or black would have Ben nice, but  I couldn't justify the extra $ until I knew I was going to use it enough. White still has wifi.

For what it's worth I've just bought the latest Sony action cam after comparing all the different options out there.

http://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/prod10712.htm

In my opinion the Sony produced the same, if not better quality images and comes with a wrist mounted LCD monitor for the same price as the GoPro without the optional "backpack". As far as mounting options, the camera includes both helmet and flat surface mounts. You can also screw a little RAM mount ball into the base of the camera and the options for RAM mounts are endless.

GoPro is huge now - every single extreme sport has them by the hundreds. I love mine, and think the video/image quality is incredible. It will be interesting to see how Sony go - they have a long way to catch up in sales!

I notice even with the waterproof housing they are only suited to 5 metres. Also, Gopro has higher definition video. The wrist watch looks cool though - amazed at how technology is developing. I can't wait to see the cameras in 10 years!

But look at the price difference between the black and silver as we got the black for only a few bucks more so went with that other wise the silver is great as well

Just be careful with the new range now guys. The GoPro range has changed dramatically and the new Hero4 black is designed purely for professionals. Hence the just under $700 price point.
However if you are just after a cheepie they now have the Hero at around $200.

I recently looked for one for my daughter. Unless they are seriously into photography, i'd have a look at the base model Hero thats new. It has all of the main functions , without the price tags of the silver or black.

Downside is that the battery is built in so you can't swap it with a full one when empty.

Got myself a few from here too. Cheap as chips, like only a few $ for basic mounts, including some decent looking alloy ones. Also got a case for my hero 3 for less than half a genuine one so I could switch between skeleton and water proof back doors easily.

Before I brought my Gopro I considered a lot of other options, including some of the cheaper cameras that look almost like a Gopro copy.  They did look pretty good value at the time when compared to the $240 I was going to outlay for the Gopro Hero 3, however the deciding factor for me was the picture quality, ease of use, support and ability to get parts and mounts.  Even though the specs on some of these cameras seem comparable to a Gopro, most can only produce a reasonable picture when the conditions (lighting) are near perfect.  I do a lot of filming in low light conditions and the quality of the Gopro video is still amazing.  From the reviews I read most cheaper cameras failed miserably in that respect.

I guess it comes down to what type of filming you are doing, and what result you expect.

so lookin to get one myself now... Want for bulbar mounting and also for diving..

So going off the main site for info -> http://shop.gopro.com/APAC/cameras (http://shop.gopro.com/APAC/cameras)  I'd go for either White or Silver...

They are both supposed to be "Waterproof to 131’ (40m)" - but you can buy an underwater housing for them... are they water proof or.... ???

My understanding is that they all come in a waterproof housing.

I have a 3Sixt without wifi and it isn't bad for $49, but it definately isn't a Gopro.

Hi Mate,
I ended up getting Hero4 silver from jb hifi. It comes with a waterproof case as std. Then you can get all sorts of mounts. Took mine away camping on the weekend to have a play with it.

My gopro hero 3 (white) came with the waterproof housing rated to 60m.  I've made a rig for mine that I drop down when fishing and we've easily had it to 60m, no problems.  Picture is still pretty good at those depths too....

Nope, wireless doesn't work underwater.  I just press record on the gopro on and drop it down on the rig we made, near the bottom, then review the footage back at home.  We drift fish and have recorded some pretty interesting stuff.

I just wanted to share a thought on the GoPro. I bought my Hero3 silver from an ebayer just over a year ago. Its bloody great and with the aerial footage and also some free diving we've used it heaps and couldn't be happier.

But..... there's always a 'but'.... I recently went to upgrade the software and the GoPro site requested the serial number located inside the battery case.... I couldn't find one...much looking later..... I find that factory seconds are being sold without serial numbers... yep, I got mine cheap(ish).

This means that technically I cant upgrade to new software, thats ok if yours is working ok, but not so if the software is your problem... bloody scammers.

After a bit of searching (this problem is not uncommon) I found a way of getting around it but, bloody hell.....

So when you receive your new GoPro, open the battery case and check that it has a serial number sticker, record that number somewhere safe (its only a sticker and can come off).

Bloody scammers.....

Mine works fine and has had some amazingly poor treatment (dropping with a quadcopter from 50m high and no damage with no case). I wonder how I would have gotten on had I needed a warranty claim????? I got lucky.....

Moral of the story? I dunno...maybe pay the few bob extra and buy the thing locally, if its not right its then their problem.... so don't be a tight arse (like me) and get what you pay for????

They come with a standard housing which is rated waterproof to 40m/ optional Dive housing is rated 60m

Whatever you get, get a model with wifi - I've got the older Hero2 and bought the optional wifi bac pac (last one in Sydney it seems) and its made videoing so much easier as it can all be done from the iPhone, and you can actually see what you are about to film.

Yeah. My hero 2 doesn't have the wifi built in. It only came out with hero 3. I think the "hero" model only requires it now.  Which is why I had to get the bacpac

I think the hero model is the old hero2 repackaged. But am not 100% without checking specs

You need the wifi to talk to the app. Without wifi the app is useless

the Hero 2's didn't come with wifi built in... that's why he would have had to but the wifi bacpac.

That said, the wifi chews the batteries something shocking. I prefer not to use it, and cut the first and last second of the video (pushing the button rattle) in post.
