So we are looking to do a couple of nights over the long weekend just with the swag this time not the camper, we take the dogs so they need things packed for them as well. We are hoping that we can have a good enough set up with the swag to have more single night trips but it still feels like I have a lot to pack :'(. As this is one of my days off I have been trying to get things ready so there is less to do come the weekend still have to get some clothes into a bag and find out if we are just taking the esky or 12v fridge. Then to also work out if there was any other food I was meant to buy yesterday. I don't want to go down the path of putting drawers in the dmax so at this stage everything is in bags, like dog blankets in one of those stripey bags and our pillows and spare blanket and towels in one as well. Am I better to go for boxes for this or just stick with the bags and throw them in on top of the ozpig bag. (Oh the ozpig haven't packed the firewood yet haha).
Well back to the packing.

Yeah the running around getting ready is my least favourite bit.

Well at least it is not just me this will be the first time in a long time that we have gone with a swag so probably once we have done it this time we will know what we do and don't need to take and can have a better set up idea.

hey Nay, agree the best way to sort out the overnight kit is to just get out and use it. i.e. I ended up at Knockwood without a couple of key things, but survived. Realised we'd spent all our focus last 6 months on using and setting up swmbo's Trackabout that I'd let my O/N kit fall into misuse. Many items that I normally have must have been put into the CT with a view of 'I'll fix the o/n kit up later' but then forgot.
When you're camping with others, you can always ask to borrow their can opener etc, but they tend to get a bit iffy when you say you left your Tbone steaks at home and can you borrow theirs? :-)

Haha what is this world coming to where you have to take your own tbone steaks camping. That is a good point though. I will probably just take the bbq utensils for this trip but would be better to eventually have a set for swag camping as well I guess it depends on how it all goes this time too.

Oh you poor thing, you may as well stay home if you are going to whinge before you even leave. Poor Andrew! :D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Wish I had those problems. Have to work 2am on Saturday till 10 and then some of Hannah's friends are coming over. Can I come too?
-
Maybe we could pack some stuff in the 6x4, if I had one that is >:D
You should bring the kids with you Fuji, they can clean the cruisa for you!

Step 1: Buy a Jayco
Step 2: Leave it packed
Step 3: After trip unpack dirty clothes
Step 4: Wash dirty clothes
Step 5: Repack clean clothes and food
Step 6: Go on another trip

or a Trackabout:-)
Sadly this doesn't work when I want to take the boat out.
Need the swag/tent kit for these times:-)

Poor Andrew? he is not doing the packing and not whinging just thinking there should be a better way.

Have fun with that, you can come too but I don't know that you can leave Hannah home alone yet.

The point is for us to not take as much lucky we don't have that trailer.

Don't have the money to buy a Jayco, I do love the camper trailer but for one night it is a lot to set up and not ideal if you end up with a wet pack up which is why we want to see how the swag set up goes.

Trackabout has same issues as our current set up wet canvas and time to pack away etc. ;D

yep, hence the o/nite kit I carry. Will have to show you next time.

We had some things that could go in one already I guess it is hard cause we have the dog stuff plus ours but I don't want to leave them home and if we go now whilst it is quiet gives us more time to get Jobe used to it. Just thinking will have to make up a box for o/n with things like egg flip tongs etc though we have a canvas type picnic bag that we used to take that has plates as well perhaps that can turn into the o/n one.

Yep this is the go ;D
love our old Jayco Swan, great for 3 or more nights or during winter.
But we(2A 3 teenagers >:D )are trying to make things easier for just one night stays or for more Off Road trips over a couple of days.
The lighter the better, less fuss, less hassle and less sh1te carried.
That's why we purchased an Oztrail 3x3 with two hubs, air beds, the sleeping bags are easy to get at in the camper, A table, gas cooker and a few utensils and chairs.
Happy days
If we haven't used something in 6 months, it's getting tossed, why cart something around just because we can ???

It's the packing up to go home, that hurts the most. :-[

Yep, worst part I reckon

And unpacking back at home just rubs it in.

Yep x2, and all of the above joined together makes for a very time consuming quick overnight.
The reason we got the trailer was not so much for the set up / pack up time at the camp ground, but for the pack and unpack at home. It's great knowing that when you get home you can just pull the trailer in un hook, grab the clothes and head inside. Can even leave the fridge running till later if you wish. Even with our set up I know some people can still pack up there tent and stuff quicker, but I bet when we get home I am in the shower, then on the couch with a beer quicker then they are.
We went to visit friends last weekend, and rather then them worry about where we will sleep, we just took the trailer, parked it in their driveway, had our own bed, fridge, coffee. Awesome. Love it.

Agreed - that's exactly what I am looking forward to.... tired of spending an hour packing / unpacking the car at home...
-
Yessiree, all the above. x 20.
Sometimes you take it slow packing up 'cause you don't want to go back home.
You just want to stay a little bit more, stay a little longer maybe.
-
I reckon I take nearly as much for a weekend as a week... just more food and few more pairs of cheese catchers for one trip..
-
I have one of those pelican cases that is always packed with my 'swag trip' cooking/cutlery/bits'n pieces. It has enough room to fit my food as well.
I use a single burner stove and travel very light. Simple meals/etc.
When ready to go, I just throw my food in the pelican case, pack swag/sleeping bag/pillow/chair/water/esky and I'm good to go.
I can be ready to go in about half an hour.
Strangely enough, I actually enjoy the packing, planning and getting ready for a camping trip!
It's when I get home and need to clean up and put things away that I hate with a passion.
-
The more you go away the better you get at doing this. Efficiency keeps improving!

I'm starting to think the "overnight pack" is the go. Get one of those plastic space cases and chuck all the stuff in that. Then all you are doing is chucking in the swag, the case and the fridge and food (and for us the dogs and dog stuff) and its on like Donkey Kong! Maybe a chainsaw in this weather as Nay-DMax is at pyro level just below Fuji and Scarps and Bird, but higher than most :D

We too have a Day Box withal the making of a day trip either way from home or the CT . From kettle to cutlery ,bickies , tinned fish & above all a pen & paper to make a list of what ever else you forgot to bring . Then include it as required

Looks like the trailer might be coming home. One more load or two and a good clean with the Karcher, a dent and paint job and she will be coming home to daddy. ;D

No need to rush mate, I have plenty of "back-ups"! Probably would have only been sitting at home doing nothing anyway! Or I might have used it to do some fencing for the horses so nothing important....... >:D

here you go, finally found the pic I was looking for.

Waeco on the right, my version of a pelican case on the left with my overnight kit in it.
Was going to sell the big esky to buy a pelican case but figured why bother, both do the same job.
-
Oh and the camp chair fits neatly in the middle
-
Looks like I have picked up a roof basket for the DMax of evilbay so will grab that on the way home tomorrow. This will give us a spot to put the dog cages and hopefully enough firewood for the weekend. Then I reckon we'll do something similar to what you have scarps, just not on slides or anything. Starting to think we should just take the swag and the dog stuff and the shot gun and just hunt for food. Should be able to find something up the river??....
-
Soft ;D
YES. ;D And VERY comfortable and quick and easy.......

We are heading up river for the long weekend with 2 other couples.
Each of us has our boat (tinny) ranging in size from 3.9 to 4.9 metres, this means we need to travel light.
2 swags, 2 chairs, table, esky, food box, clothing bag, flat BBQ plate and associated bits, that's it no more room.
I love it, pared back to the basics, 70 km up river from the nearest civilisation and best of all the kids have been left at home.
Woohoo

With 3 kids it is always a struggle for us to find time to do the packing/prep. It's especially worse at the moment since my wife is typically asleep by 9pm (that's another story). So I have to deal with the usual evening housework as well as packing for any trip.
We sometimes take the trailer, sometimes don't. Every trip is different so it isn't possible to just leave everything packed and ready to go.
Sometimes I wonder if it is worth the hassle.

Yep it can be tough I always think it is worth the hassle as I love to get away, more so that if we are going to use the swag will be good to have an o/n set up a bit like some of those listed above.
-
Why did you go and buy a roof basket when I have a practically new one sitting under the house you could have had for nix? >:(

Bugger mate had no idea you had one there ??? never mind cant do much about it now.
-
I've got a couple of hard plastic boxes, one has the kitchen and cooking gear, one with food, that helps a bit, but I'm not a fan of packing either.

Damn, wonder if SWMBO will let me put 1 on bars on the canopy too?

That's what I thought...but it's still canvas, so if wet have to open up. Can't just relax cos u have to unclip, raise roof, crawl in to get food n boxes out, then close roof n clips.
Usually if not wet I just leave it and unpack the next day.
My biggest gripe is on longer trips when I have to bring the roof pod. That really sh#%s me cos I can't back the trailer through the garage until I've removed it and all the contents!! :-\
Maybe a caravan would be easier >:D
