Met up with a postie today riding what appeared to be a bicycle as I was walking the dawg.
I said, "back to pushies again?"
He said "naw mate this bike is electric."
I said "WTF?"
He said, "piece of crap!"
I said, "I use to ride pushies, nothing electric when I was a postie 25 year ago."
I would say AusPost is trialling them to save money from not buying anymore Honda 90s.
Such is life. ;D

With a bit of inside knowledge, I can ad to this.
They've been in use for about 5 years now, in a 2 and 3 wheel version, although there have been a few different models over time.
It's not to do with replacing the motorcycles, they were introduced to aim the employment base towards part time employees with out the need for a motorcycle license (ie; school mums).
and yes..........they are a piece of crap (personal opinion only).

Honda 90 postie bike is like an aussie icon, not from personal experience but if you are going to ride them in the back yard even slowly don't run over a plum you will slide into the side of the house. It did provide some entertainment for those of us watching.

yeah seen that but as with anything you need the right tyres.
The old trials tyres were good on them the nobbies were too much.

I always thought they were CT110's not 90s..
Theres only about 5000000 of them on Ebay... :D

Early bikes were 90s and the later ones with the high/low range were the 110s I think the story is.
There was a charity run from Nathalia to Alice Springs on postie bikes a few years ago. That would have been fun.
Think Australia Post were also probably getting sick of fixing/servicing the bikes, and rego etc etc etc

I always thought they were CT110's not 90s..
since were being pedantic,
The current CT110's (which are actually 109.3cc) are now in the process of being replaced with the new NBC110's (which are actually 109.7cc).
runs and hides now in case lost-bird gets cranky ;D

The lime green in the picture only lasted about 3 months, now there all being redone in red.

I've ridden a prototype electric dirt bike. Holy Carp Batman!! What a beast :cheers:
Max torque from zero RPM. The only reason it needed gears was because it was based on a stock Honda bike, but in production you won't need gears. So no gearbox, no oil, no need for a sidestand....just lay it on the ground. Very creepy to ride though because the only real sound was the tyres and the chain flopping about.
So don't knock electric bikes. They are closer to being a reality than you might imagine.

Bloke at work had a 110 that he did his 70km daily commute on. Did it for about 7 years.
His favourite line when going into the local Honda dealer for parts was to ask for a set of filters for his big Honda ct eleven oh....... Usually had the young blokes scratching their heads till the penny dropped.

They have just updated all the local postie bikes around my area, still all honda's however around the festive season we get the pasties on push bikes

Yeah the CT110 is the old one, still plenty getting around. They didn't have they hi/lo range. There was one with the dual range gearbox but that was sold as an ag bike. Not road register able in Aus.
The CT90 was the earlier one, same bike with the smaller engine.
The new design is lime green one but aust post paints them red (for obvious reasons).
Remember Honda doesn't make these for Aust post, they are sold all over the world (you know when you see these Asian countries with bikes running around everywhere, well many of them will be Hondas). I believe the CT110 was the biggest selling bike in the world for many years, hence never needing to upgrade it! (Think Toyota attitude). But sales started to slip a it with all the new competition, so a new design was in order....... This one will run for another 20 years no doubt!
Tough little bike the CT110 I have one that i used to use for shooting. I took it everywhere my mate went with his 4wd quad and never broke a thing. My mate would always laugh and tell me every trip that I would being it home in pieces..... But never happened.

From memory, you could buy a CT-110 off Honda, but it wasn't ADR'd (eg. Ag bike use). Only those coming into Australia for Aust Post were ADR'd (and i think AP actually did the ADR-ing), so for road use, the only option is a used ex-AP model.

Just to clear the record..
Aust Post bikes were a special build from the factory, PMG red colour and all, they had compliance plates fitted by the factory as I recollect.
The Ag bikes did indeed have a dual range box and nobbys, special guards for lights etc and most importantly that AG definition which made them sales tax free for primary producers.
The entire year's supply was done in a single run for Australia and Brazil. no other country got them in that spec.
In fact they came in wooden crates, it wasn't worth Honda's while to set up the usual metal and cardboard crates. Which pissed me off because they had to be fumigated at customs.
And it was a bonanza when the feds relented and allow the entire XR range to also get AG spec!
All you had to do was order an XR in AG spec and a special kit (headlight guards etc and a big AG sticker) got chucked in the crate by the warehouse.
the only AG kit I ever saw fitted on an XR was the one we did up for a country show! but I'm sure there were others.... somewhere..

Ahhh I remember working for the PMG. My red pushie, my leather satchel and a handful of telegrams and off I went.
