Title: Is there an epedemic?
Post by: noel_w on June 02, 2014, 09:05:55 AM
Dunno whether it was coincidence or not but spotted 3 separate Landrover/Rangerovers on flatbeds on the weekend just around my neighborhood. 2 x RR and 1 x Disco4
Normally this would not come to my attention but have been thinking of Firefox's exceptional run of luck with his and would have been in the back of my mind.

Don't get me wrong as I have always had a thing for the Landy's (probably due to the movie "The God's Must Be Crazy") and I do not want to start a flame war.
Do you think this is exceptional or just a bad day. And please keep it civil.

Told this story before. I went to try out a D4 and the cruiser at dealerships that were side by side. The disco wouldn't start at first then the GPS wouldn't work and the windows wouldn't go back up! Maybe unfortunate but when they have had history of unreliability and considering the overall lower numbers compared to other vehicles. I think they have a deserved rep. Still an impressive vehicle.

Landrover on a flatbed truck - that's it's normal position!!!

A mate tood his Landy across Australia - Sydney to Perth, and planned to bring it back.
we have a standard message in the Spot connect "The Hood Is Up" so I know when he has mechanical difficulty.

He had a few on that trip, including here (click on the link - nice spot to break down):-
100Km out of Norseman, WA (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=-32.06459,123.02393&ll=-32.06459,123.02393&ie=UTF8&z=12&om=1)

Long story short, it ended up in a dealer in perth, then another town in WA, took 3 months and they freighted his Landy back to him after an engine swap.
Still an unreliable POS, awesome offroad, when it goes, not fun to be around when it doesn't.

The strippers of the auto world.

When they are on they are awesome.  But they will stab you in the back and take your wallet!

Some years ago a client  of mine purchased a Disco  new . Picked it up 2 km from his home , later that day had to drive to Melb almost 17 Km away  . Cool      . On the way home with 37 KM on the clock it failed to proceed . Long story short somebody had forgotten to install an oil pump in the motor before it was delivered .  A new donk had to be flown out to Auss from UK , as it had never happened before  ??? ??? ??? So why did it happen in the 1st place       ???
Arrrrrrr yes the flat bed truck          >:D

Last trip to fraser in april the only car i saw broken down was a new range rover on a flatbed. Apparently the 20cm of water at eli creek was too much for the electronics and they had to skull drag it out.

I still have no resolution, been waiting 5 weeks.

I firmly believe that landrover are building cars for the soccer mum. Which is fine, you can't use them as a 4wd. I love them off-road but as most has said, when they work.

Your resolution is a 200 series :)

5 weeks :o I'd be asking for a full refund

I did see a new RRS yesterday in it's natural habitat on Spencer St CBD :) They look good with the black roof but I wouldn't take one in the bush.

They all are mate, being honest..  They are the majority of the market - those and overpaid exec's who buy them for status like Dr's with Rangie's...

You're stringing this along for sympathy now. Get into a 200.

he he.. Yeah well first we've got to sort out the vehicle.

I am currently sitting waiting (very fast losing my patience) what am i saying it's already gone.

The General Manager of Landrover has stepped in and flew back into the country and is apparently calling me first thing in the morning. It's been a stupid game, lawyers are involved, but Landrover are trying to keep them out of it..

I'd love for the info i have to come out on them, god they have dug themselves such a terrible hole. Personally i just want to get on with it.. Either that be in a new LC200 or RRS or whatever.. Being stuck in nowhere is terrible.

We shall wait and see. Was promised the return of the current car on the 28th May, then on the 4th of June and now "MAYBE" the 7th of June.. We shall wait and see. I looked at it yesterday and it's in about 1000 pieces...

I will say out of the Land Rover, Jeep and Pajero that I have owned only the Jeep and Pajero have had tow truck rides ...

However the Land Rover had everything replaced (engine, gearbox, sensors, ECU, manifold, fuel pump, etc etc etc) over its 4 year life.  the Jeep needed a tow as it did a water pump at 180k on Xmas Eve in Gin Gin as the only mechanic in town was closed until the New Year, and the Pajero had a tow when the fan munched the fan shroud and I wanted MM to fix it under warranty.

Just like I said, depends which day and who put the bits in when they make them.
Just like any other vehicle.
And just like any other vehicle, there's No substitute for Cubic Inches.

I had a similar issue with a bike once... 22 warranty claims in 18mths - right down to the paint started falling off when I washed it. Wouldn't run in cold weather, you name it.
Best one was all 4 exhaust studs snapped (ended up being a recall item then never fixed on mine) at Benalla on way to Melbourne from Shitney.. Sounded like a big end had gone to me... they told me to just keep riding it...
Problem was I was dealing with the importer from day 1... I had the head mechanics mobile #.
