Title: Help out Closed camper trailer manufacturer owner
Post by: MarkVS on May 15, 2014, 05:32:21 AM
As some of you know, recently Vacation Campers went under.

I recently had a zipper go on my Vacation Camper camper trailer door. Rang Theo and he was happy to do a fix for me for a fair cost.

Dropped it around and was having a chat with him. Simply, they went bust because they couldn't compete with the cost of imported models, in the maket segment they were in. They were looking to move into a more upmarket/expensive model, but that required time and capital, and when you have tight conditions, reduced labour, and have already put a fair chunk of your own house mortgage into the business to keep it going, very hard to do.

The reason for this thread is that I found Theo and Pauline to be very honest and straight forward people. Theo knew his trade stuff, and Pauline was well known for her canvas work. Personally they are doing it tuff adjusting to having to have to shut their business, and financially as well.

If any of you who live on the Brisbane Northside, need Canvas or general work done to your camper, please keep them in mind.

It's a sign of the times, low cost of imports making it hard for Aussie manufacturers. There is a market in service, modification and repairs though, it's very hard to send your camper back to china to get a zipper fixed.

That's really bad news for another Aussie manufacturer. Let's hope that they get plenty of support in the repair and refit area.

Thanks for the post as I was asked 2 weeks ago if I knew anyone in the canvas business which I didn’t. So I will pass these details on.

Damn shame
Its only going to get worse.

My  old boss at the motorcycle shop, closed his doors 18mths ago after over 30yrs in the same building... Everyone would come in, try stuff on, then go buy it on the net for prices he couldn't buy it for. He has since opened up a workshop only.. you cant get servicing online.

It is hard to find someone to QUALITY service and do repairs on trailers... We are lucky to have GeoffA on the forum for servicing :P

Thanks for the heads up, Mark. I'll definitely keep them in mind as I'll be looking for some annex extensions in the not so distant future. Where in Brissie are they exactly?

I had a good look at VC at a camping/caravan show a few years ago, and the quality was obvious. Sorry to hear they have closed the doors :(
