Title: Chainsaws
Post by: Brett on August 13, 2007, 11:06:16 PM
Guys,

I'm buying a chainsaw and just wondering what you guys have or had used.

I will be looking at 2 brands, Stihl and Husqvarna. With a bar length around 40cm.

Mainly for cutting firewood, trees across tracks and home use.

Mate, I would look at a little smaller wrt the size blade.  I have a 12inch or 30cm McCullock (sp) and the larger you go the harder they are to store, even with the blade removed. Both brands that you have selected are very go and shouldn't be a problem.  IMHO, think about storage size.  My 12inch cut's through just about anything without issue.......

Don't forget POULON - they are Huskies but made in USA. I only found out by accident but yep that is also what I have ... I was told this by the HUSKY agent in Cairns

Grrr!!! >:D

I wouldn`t go anything smaller than a 40 cm bar as if you cutting for firewood any smaller would be useless .

Bigger bar  >   bigger tree   > bigger fire ....

There all good brands I have the Poulon like Crazy Dogs and its been a great little weapon over the years.....but these days I hangout with guys that have there own Chainsaws.....and they just love to cut timber.....and I just love to enjoy there fires ;D ;D...Good size is the 40cm blade you can cut down forests with these bad boys. Had a bit to do with Chainsaws over the years and I did my trade in the Simpson Forest !!

FWIW I have a 38cc 40cm bar Talon chainsaw. Have used it regularly over a 2 year period and it has started first time every time. I would have no hesitation in buying another if it went for a walk. Comes with its own hard case and for $200 represents decent value I reckon.

Hey Brett,

The Huskies are supposed to be a good bit of gear. One thing i have heard of them is that they have some rubber mounts that need replacing every two years or so. I was told this by two separate sources one a husky dealer. No major problem just thought I would give you the heads up.

I will be buying an Oleo Mac chainsaw this week  :cup:

There are threads and webpages with shonky copies from alibaba on google... they are just a middle man between you and the seller. Most of the stuff they sell is from Copy city .. err China.

few on alibaba's own forums. also google aliexpress and their 'problem resolution'....

I'll pass thanks.

the dodgy fuel mixing bottle and the cheap orange tool pouch give em away,

the ms 070 he sold recently havnt been made by stihl for years, and with no chain brake is illegal for sale in AUS anyway.

Proof or B.S. I say, big call warning folks off supposedly fake items with no other information than your word.

your call, sure they are good copies, they fooled you didnt they.

this is where they came from

http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/364795929/chain_saw_ms_070.html

http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/464014525/chain_saw_ms_381.html

http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/428586375/chain_saw_ms_250.html

they range from $300 landed from china.

if i wanted to save money on a stihl i would get one shipped from the US from a trusted friend/accociate, as stihl dealers in the US wont export as it risks losing dealership rights.

theres nothing against using a 3rd partys however to buy and dispatch on your behalf.

and then you could get a genuine current range stilhl like a ms261 for about$ 715 aud landed.

if you wanted a knock up you could get one from china yourself for less but at least you wouldnt be under any illusion you were getting a genuine.

china link for ms 070 knock up www.dhgate.com/stihl-ms070-chainsaw-4-8kw-105cc-36-quot/p-ff8080813184c93c01318633c3a91868.html

china link for ms 081 knock up http://www.dhgate.com/stihl-gasoline-chain-saws-ms-381/r-ff8080812afb80ec012afdcf6ab83b1b.html

china link for ms 381 knock up  http://www.dhgate.com/stihl-ms-250-gasoline-chain-saw-oo-4600-ce/r-ff8080812afb80ec012afdd141403e9e.html

that guy is flogging em as genuine and starting em at $600.

try running one of these knockups at 50:1 fuel mix as stihl recommends rather than 25:1 that the chinesse links suggest and just see how long the P%C hold up.

but again your call,

ahhhh... evilBay.....the world would be sooooooo boring without it.......

Personally i prefer Stihl, but Huskies are pretty good. They used to be crap 20 yrs ago, big heavy things, they are now on a par with zee Germans. The guy who runs the Chainsaw course we sen dour people to used to be a Stihl Man and now uses exclusivley Huski. Reckons as good to use and maintain, cheaper to buy: How can you beat that? My little 026 with 16" bar is 12yrs old and going strong. Come to think of it, Its time for a new bar and chain..........Memo to self befoer the next trip

IMHO Anyone who Knowingly buys a chinasaw without a chainbrake is an idiot or has a death wish. Its your head Ralph!

Actually they didn't fool me at all as I never looked, I was merely pointing out, that you are claiming the saws a person on Ebay is selling, are fakes, without any information to back up that claim.

Now you have posted your reasons why you believe them to be fakes, folks can make up their own mind and go from there. I apologise if I offended, but without all the relevant information how can anyone make an informed decision.

Clearing Sales and chainsaws there a match made in heaven. People go mad on chainsaws at clearing sales, often paying as much or more for a used saw as new one would cost with out knowing the work history of the saw.
Crazzzzyyyy stuff to watch.

I have had my stihl farm boss for 17 years and have abused it sensely.  It has built (with my help!) 20+km of fence (including dropping the tree, post making, slabbing for the rails, stay building), several farm buildings, more firewood than I care to think of, track clearing, storm clean ups, prunning in our 2000 tree orchard, plus many other tasks.  Still starts thirds pull and has only had an occasional service (three in 17 years).  I can't recommend it more highly for durability.

I have a mate who is a Husky fan and I have used his a few times.  It seems lighter, but not as torguey.  Still a good bit of kit and he has also had a great run out of it and I think it would also be a viable option.

One comment about bring/sending chainsaws.  When they are sold new, often they are test started and tuned at the shop that sells them and so has a little fuel still in them.  This is not received well by the shipping company or airline if a bit of fuel leaks out during transport.

Just my 10cents worth

both husky and stihl have consumer range stuff, (ms170 from stihl and the various re-badged talons that husky sell) which is mostly pretty cheap and chearfull,

on the other hand both still sell serious saws such as the pro ranges such as magnums (stihl) and XP range (husky) that are an entirely different range.

and the smallest rear handles quality saws are the 50cc stihl ms261 and the husky xp346 which are very hard to split .

its not a fair comparison to compare any stihl or husky consumer product with any pro product.

Just bear in mind that a brand that was good 5 or 10 years ago may have changed since; under cost pressures from Chinese makers, an inadvertent result of worse management etc etc.

Purchased the same saw except branded GME, bloody good saw for the money, and small enough to chuck in a boot. Starts easy and cuts through anything upto the size of the bar with ease. Pitty it didn't come with a hard case.

Bunnings also sell this saw branded as ozito.

Maybe cheap but I would I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one for the occassional light users.

Over the years I've had Stihl, Jonsered, Poulan and Husky.  They've all been good.

When you look at what pro timber cutters use, it's Stihl or Husky.  The goss is that Stihl quality has declined however.  And even some of those guys are buying cheap Chinese jobs as backup machines.

For occasional use, I'm not sure that the brand matters that much.  The key to performance is to maintain the bar and chain properly and not to use stale fuel.

That said, the current tool is a Husky 345E with an 18" bar and it goes gangbusters.  Easy start every time; low vibration; good balance.  Got this from a gray-market importer on Ebay.

In the bush, it pays to take a couple of plastic wedges to avoid embarrassment, a decent length of non-stretch rope and a spare chain (at a minimum; take sharpening gear if out for any length of time).

HTH

I grabbed the Ozito one of these about a year ago from Bunnings for $99 on special and it's been an awesome saw for camping firewood, if I had a fireplace at home I'd buy one of the better brands without a doubt, but for a saw that does about 1-3 hours cutting a year it's perfect.
