We are going camping for a few weeks and the missus has made her one and only request. We are camping where there are no facilities and she wants a touch more luxury when "using the bathroom".
We don't want any sort of actual toilet (then we would have to clean it haha!), we are just after something to sit on rather than squatting.
I have thought about the old milk crate with a toilet seat cable tied to it but it is a bit cumbersome. Thought about having 2 uses for it but thought that storing stuff in it may not be the most hygenic thing to do.
Any other ideas?

Have you tried the Thunderbox. ;D
-
We have one of these. Works quite well

We have had both of the items above and the Thunderbox wins. :cup: Depending on where we are we will either dig a hole or use a large bucket. We also use environmentally friendly bags in both instances. With the use of a hole the bag protects the Thunderbox, just don’t forget to rip a hole in the bottom of the bag, and with the bucket we will then bury the bag after our stay. Kevin

x 2 for Jimmy Thunderbox

We also have Thunderbox which is a great setup. The only problem is that you have to dig a hole everywhere you camp. This can sometimes cause a problem if the ground is rock hard. That is why we have a Thunderbox and one of these

Once I fit the magazine holder to the side she'll be finished :cup: ...................this is our crapper for when we're bush camping ;D , works a treat and folds up in one second
Cheers

Another for Jimmy's Thunderbox with biodegradable plastic liner.
-
We use a chemical loo now but we used to use a hole with a toilet seat sitting on an old fold up chair. I prefer this than the chemical loo to be honest as we generally only use the chemical loo for number 1's unless there is no other option.

A couple of cement pills....some squatting practise beforehand and ......( mine hasn't learnt this bit yet )...some hole digging practise !!!! ;D ;D
While you may think I'm joking, my missus was very anti squatting in the bush ( still is if she has a choice ), but didn't complain after the 1st time it happened.........it's not as bad as some may think...

$20 Ally directors chair and a square of 7mm ply cut to shape and varnished $5 seat all from Bunggings for us
-
Another vote for Jimmy's Thinderbox. It has served us well.
-
Thunder box for me. Stick a bucket in it, with bag for no 2s.
Folds flat.
Renno
-
This is a sh!t thread huh.... ;D
We use the same as Muzza, not that bad to sort/clean out afterwards and we do both in ours.
-
Firstly, the squat had been the weapon of choice for years but after our last trip where she saw a small snake while snapping one off she doesn't like that idea anymore!!!
Does the Thunderbox have a bottom? Do you need to put a bucket/bag in there or can you dig a hole and just put this over the top?
I'm liking the home made jobs too, more my style but lack of time (and my forgetfulness haha) may be my enemy there...
Kevin, where do you get the bio-friendly bags from? Camping/caravan shops or K-mart etc?
-
Seen this today at Rays $69 this is OUR (SHBMO) current biggest discussion point around "what to buy" prior to our first weekend away
-
Should be able to get bin liner Bio bags in woolies " Glad " make them but not sure if all stores carry them though..

The digging the hole part..
We often take a post hole digger

Great for making that long drop.

Yet another vote on the Thunderbox here. We also line with a bag and cut the bottom out, keeps Jimmy clean to pack away.
-
Jimmy's thunderbox here too we did have an old oil drum with toilet seat on it but it took up a lot of space and dug into the ground a bit. Jimmy's folds flat into the hessian cover and fits easily in the camper. Like others we put the bag inside with a hole in the bottom keeps it much cleaner and yep just dig a hole and sit it over the top. Big winner for me is how compact it is I figure if I want to use it I dig the hole set up the tent and toilet and pack it up and fill the hole, since we have to squat every time we go I would rather this plus it is then one hole instead of lots all over the place. Sometimes if the ground is hard to have to get help with the digging part.
-
Sheila's point of view.
Go the "toilet" not the crapper bucket with a seat. You sit, do your business, wipe, flush, shut the floor "door", but the lid down, man takes care of the rest.
Much better in my very honest opinion.

He makes me use a Thetford. ;D

Haha not in this house! You make the mess you clean it up!!!!!!

1 X star picket banged into the ground to give you something to grab hold of when things get busy >:D

That'll never catch on....... ;D

Perhaps a contender for quote of the year...
-
Jimmy's Thunder Box.
Made a base out of hardwood decking(90x19mm) so it doesn't sink into soft ground, especially when on the cleanup stroke and your on a lean to the port side ;D
We've carted a porta loo about for two years and never used it.
Seemed like a good idea at the time ???
-
Number 1 with this one for the missus-
http://www.myswag.org/index.php?topic=25432.msg392854#top (http://www.myswag.org/index.php?topic=25432.msg392854#top)
Did over 14500kms Adel-Darwin-NW of WA with it and shovel and hole under mostly but the placcy bin liner and kitty litter commode setup for inside is invaluable at roadside stops with lots of company. Add your food scraps to the biodegradable recycled kitty litter to bury before heading off and the placcy bag liner which saves washing the bowl can go in the next bin drop.
We did carry a $100 fleabay portapotti just in case certain NPs required one but never used it.
-
Besides our Porta Loo we also have one of these for bush camping.

Use bags and/or a bucket under the seat. Dispose of in the usual manner.
-
didn't like what was on the market so made ur own.
seat height is exactly the same as the one at home for that 'familiar feel"
as for a hole digger, made our own there too. cuts a 300mm x 1200mm hole in the sand easy as
-
what ever toilet you choose these toilets can be dangerous, so, STAY SAFE and always use protection
;D
-
I love the toilet roll holder! As cool as that dunny setup is, its a bit much for what I'm after!
Gloves are a great idea, already have the disinfectant hand gel stuff. My toilet kit seems to be getting bigger by the day.
Anyone know where to get a Jimmy's Thunderbox in Perth by next Tuesday? Won't get here in time if I go online...
-
I also keep one of these when having to empty the thing

Yeah I find it works a treat too when the missus is a bit constipated and I show up in one saying boo
