Post by: McGirr on December 11, 2013, 08:45:07 PM

The daughters heading to Melbourne Boxing Day for about 6 nights and just wondering if any one knows of a budget car hire place. She is 21 so we expect a million dollar excess  ;D

Any info would be great.

Book the car online in your name with your daughter as a second driver, that might save a few dollars.

Don't know about her but recently tripped to tassie, by Qantas, searched before I went for good car hire.

In the end cheapest was Avis for a three day package!

Most of the big rental car companies won't rent to P-platers. Don't know if the budget guys do.

Also might be cheaper if there is a huge excess to take out travel insurance that covers a rental car excess,
assuming they don't ask questions about P plates?

Use taxis and public transport. Can't imagine the cost would be that much different...........................and you don't have to worry about a mountain of other problems.

She may have to walk as most hire companies either won't hire or charge an extra $30 a day.

Let us know, I am sure we can work out a tour plan for her. You look after the northern tours enough, time to help out down South ;D

Just did a online quote for travel insurance with the RACV, incudes rental car upto $4000
excess, cost $97 for a week. And you can increase the excess amount for an extra premium.

That's what I use and don't take excess cover when I hire the car.

Mark, just get her to get cab into Melbourne and get public transport around locally. Send me a PM if you need a cabbie. I have a bloke I use 2-3 times a week he will do a deal and look after her. It will also be statesman so they have plenty of room for their gear etc

Yes and it is better than rent a bomb, because it is not my problem when it breaks down, gets scratched etc etc.  ;D

Caught up with my daughter and her boyfriend and they may wait till they get there first before deciding on hiring.

We told them we have heard that driving in the CBD of Melbourne can be scary. We heard of people still trying to find their way out of the city for 2 years.  ;D

Thanks again for everyone's assistance.
