Title: XBOX ONE
Post by: oldmate on December 01, 2013, 09:24:28 PM
A warning for all you gamers and parents who may be getting an Xbox one for the kids/family for Xmas. Make sure you have a good braodband connection with lots of gigs and don't leave it to Xmas morning to open it. My advice is to open it while the kids are at school and do any updates on console and games, otherwise my prediction is you may have some un happy kids and even more in happy mums and dads. I have had one for 24hours and still can't play a game. I think my problem is my mobile 4g broadband is not a steady enough connection to download needed updates.

Better still, go get a ps 4 instead.

I had a similar prob with the PS3. On ADSL2 but in a congested area and it takes a while to update.

Quote
After Sony’s PlayStation 4 was launched in Europe yesterday, gamers have been complaining about their inability to sign into PSN.

In a post on Sony's forums, a moderator said high volume on PSN is causing network latency: "We are aware of the issue and working to resolve it as quickly as possible. We are sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience," the moderator wrote.

Sony also updated the forum post to explain there are new issues with redeeming codes/vouchers on the PSN. To address everything that's going wrong and investigate the network issues further, the "redeem voucher” functionality on PSN has been suspended temporarily.

"Unfortunately this means that money cards, product vouchers, PlayStation Plus vouchers, PS3-PS4 upgrade vouchers and any other vouchers for digital content are not redeemable until this is resolved. Other PSN features should still be available, but there may be intermittent issues," Sony explained.

I'll stick with the 360 as long as I can... None of my 30 odd games will work on Xbox1 cause MS want you to buy them all again.

I just want a console just for the console, and not have any or need any Internet connection. It seems that is impossible now.

Correct. They all have to report to the mothership.

Trying to use it through mobile will end in failure...

we were looking at the xbox one for the kids for xmas. 599, and doesnt include a single game apparently.

Far out, it would be close to $1000 by the time you get a second controller and a game. Wonder if my 8 year old would like some maxtrax instead  8)

Sounds about right, cost us $599 for console, $88 for game ( that really has nothing on it), then what ever Internet costs for all the downloads you have to get before it all works, so far about 8gig, and the game still wants to download more.  We didn't get a 2nd controller

Yeah Iam content to stick with the 360 for now. But MS will force us over with game releases etc eventually. For now the one doesn't even have GTA !

Steams game box will be worth watching. Reportedly just going to be a PC based game console but much more powerful?

GTA5 was crap anyway. The game play and graphics etc were good, but the story was way to short. I had it done after 2 weekends and was dissapointed, so traded it in. That was on ps3 anyway.

I only play them for multiplayer oldmate. Couldn't give a FF about the single player game. No time, haven't finished a single player game for years, just want to co op MP with my two boys.

Correct on both counts.
Not making the console backwards compatible is awesome marketing from ****soft, but puts many players out of the market.

COD 2
MW3
playin the new Ghost lately, but I ****in hate (http://www.upsb.info/forum/style_emoticons/default/sniper.gif) snipers... they are almost impossible to see where all other games you had a chance of seeing them

When buying games look at videoezy online etc they often have 15-20% off retail

Wow, reading all that you lot have put here reminds me how out of touch I am.
I have had a Play station, a grey box type. Then got a new smaller updated version, got a game for it and got to the end but missed something along the way in the 1st part and couldn't find what I had to do. The game was a WW11 war game, any way, I gave up, we had kids soon after and not turned 1 on since.
On a ship I worked on once, to watch a movie was via 1 of these game things, had to get someone to show me how to work it, I gave up on that to. Read a book instead.
We have a wii thing, never gets turned on, kids are not interested.

I have seen kids grown up on these things. They turn out as social retards.

Yes things have changed over the years even I have trouble keeping up and most of my friends see me as the go to person for advice all this cloud stuff makes things interesting but makes up backing up all your data (photos) so easy as well technology can be good used right.

Just like anything in moderation, some parents use these things like consoles as Baby sitters and this I feel is wrong, but they can be a lot of fun though with the family on the rainy days.

Give my son the choice of Game or hanging with dad in the shed building kwap and I think you would be surprised at what he picks every time I think its more a case of people not making time to spend with their kids is the problem so many grow up these days with no skills.

last night we sat back and watched a number of MySwag youtube clips on the TV some very interesting some gave us laughs some were OMG but without technology we would have never seen these and all the gory fun of 4WD around our country and with our fibre connection it was fantastic no buffering no problems.

It's all about raising your kids with the correct attitude and balance to all things. Denying them a game console can do more harm than good IMO. All our kids had "limited" access to gaming from an early age. They are all great social kids, we are constantly getting comments from friends and others about how confident and social they are.

They all have other interests as well. We do not police there gaming anymore and they still manage their sport, social and school activities in balance.

Blaming game consoles for how children turn out is just another modern day cop out for poor parenting.

Well said achjimmi, my girls are eight & six & have their own iPods, loaded with games & music. They'd still prefer to be outside playing & if they didn't prefer that, they still would be outside. As a parent, it's my job to make sure that they don't slip into the couch potato mould with whatever tech/gaming device they have.

As for the rest of you guys, you're too clued up for me! I bought my PS3 as a present to myself the first pay after cyclone Ului hit Sarina when I lived there. That would be five or six years ago now & I just learnt how to game online with it about three months ago. I'm 34 & now feel prehistoric... The Dodo comes to mind  ???

Its the first game I've played with intelligent enemy.. in other words they don't just stand there and get shot like all the other games..
They hide, they jump out of the way = that's not to say the ghosts don't stand there but they are hard to kill at best of times..

There are also many 'hidden' things to find and do... Nearly got my main player to level 40 which is highest and the mega challenges happen and some of the weapons are (http://castletv.net/wp-content/forumuploads/tracylee55/2014/06/_thumbs/_Smiley-insanity.gif).. :D
although many players got to level 40 9mths ago....

Friend of mine had a TRS 80 as well. Took a week of keying in lines of code after work each day just to play a game of chess. We would take it in turns entering the code as our fingers got sore and our eyes went blurry. Aah, the good old days.

JB HiFi Online have just delivered on behalf of Santa for my two boys. I'll sneak it out tomorrow and commence the setup whilst they are at school.

Do I need to start each of the games as well to save us from the Christmas Day Download blues?

It won't really matter as we are heading to Jervis Bay for a week camping but I was told that you should "sign up" as downloading free games is only possible for games released from the day your subscribe - the earlier you subscribe, the more free games? - don't know how much truth is in it?

BTW - JB have a package for a 1TB FIFA 16 that starts at $449. - I note they have other packages for those on the hunt for a "reasonable" price.

Free Games with gold is only what's available at the time. I don't think you can retrospectively go back and choose. There's only one or two games available a month. Is its not a list that you pick and choose. You'll only get what's available that month. Next month will be a different game. Eg Gears of War 3 two mths ago, some rally game last month and dungeon keeper(?) this month + some random game I've never heard off.

Xbox 360 backwards compatibility requires you to have the 360 version of the disk. You put in the 360 disc into the XboxOne, it recognises the disc and downloads the Xbox one version. They're aiming to release 100 games a month. Second hand Xbox 460 discs are about to get expensive!!

Xbox marketplace allows you to buy whatever game is listed at anytime as long as you pay

Yep. And maybe a few days out just check for new updates.  These things do updates all the time now, it's not like an Atari.  ;D

Oldmate - you've saved Christmas with this thread.

Last day today that I had a chance to hookup the Xbox whilst I was home and the kids at school. I had to duck out and buy a network switch for the Xbox and decided to plug in the tv and everything else that is internet enabled in the AV setup.

I only got as far as the initial download which has taken two hours. First game I put in said a 2.7gb download !

I'll have to fit those in sometime later. Just packed it all back up prior to the kids walking through the door in five minutes.

Thanks for everyone's feedback.

This thread has talked me out of "upgrading" to an Xbox one.
All I play is the single player campaigns on my 360 so I've never hooked it up to the Internet.
Sounds like a real pain in the butt having to download updates before you can even play the damn thing. Even more so given that our internet isn't real fast here.
Think I'll stick to my Xbox360 even though I'm a massive Halo fan and would love to play the new one.

Yeah when we got ours, it turned into a nightmare, as for internet we just had a laptop running of a mobile internet thing. Had to take the xbox over to my mates place to do the first day start up lol.

We soon realised that we would need a fixed braoband with good speed and unlimited data hahaha ;D ;D

I do spend a bit of time playing this now though

Once you run the updates, your set... its a day of pain and months of enjoyment... occasionally you get a 300meg update, which is actually a complete change to the game usually, like new maps, or weapons etc... really keeps the interest up.

I'm still playin the 360 too... but now that the 360 games are compatible with the 1, heaven...

Playing online is a whole new world I didn't think I'd enjoy so much.. but I joined a 'clan', and during CLAN WARS we came first 2 years in a row in our class  :cup: :cup: :cup: But the dudes I was playin' with were phenomenal, and really carried me...

Halo Guardians is the whole reason I want to upgrade... Is that sad? Acutally I don't care what anyone else thinks...

Oh and the fact if you have a Windows 10 PC you can stream games from your XBOX to the windows 10 PC... Finally I might be able to claim my TV back from the kids...

Got COD Blackops 3 today...

3 gig update to begin with, and about 30 odd mins to install (I lost track while doing other Shit).... But I did pre-order mine and got all the extra goodies and maps and shiznit...

Cammo is playin Zombies, that doesn't interest me, I like the multiplayer gig online.

This is a great idea,  it will need a load of updates.

However,  I would also take it out a week or so prior to Xmas if possible.  It's likely that every game & console will need more updates then too.  That said,  it shouldnt stop them from being able to play single player games.  Just perhaps not online.

Also,  if you have not already make sure you catch the new free with gold game 'Knight Squad' I reckon it's a great casual game to play with friends both old & young.

I heard a rumour that the xbox can handle up to 8 controllers?  It appears as though Knight Squad supports this.  That could be a whole lot of fun!

So the Santa  is bringing the family an Xbox one for Xmas. I decided to 'test it' before Xmas to make sure it works.

Turn it on. Update to console required 1GB
Then controller update required - not sure how big
Install Halo 5. - 14GB update required after install.
Gave up and Put it back in the box

Then to top it off we were going to sell the Xbox 360 only to see that Aldi are selling them in their next specials for $169.

LOL - found out my issue. Had it connected to the network via a cable and it was still very slow. Have since discovered that the cable has a fault (loose connection at the plug)   :-[   So it was competing for Wireless bandwidth with all the other devices.

Changed the cable over and it went off like a wounded bull. Final 40% done in about 15 minutes.. So its all ready for Xmas day - all up to date, all games for gold transferred over, all the kids profiles sitting in the cloud ready to copy across, and I may have had a sneaky hour or two on Halo... :)

How did you find the new Halo?

Building a PC for mates son for xmas... he wants it for Fallout 4 which is going mad apparently... sad thing is I cant download the updates for it as they are on "STEAM" ... the Patches are not available separately :(

This thread made me laugh. I remember getting myself the one  for xmas last year I think. Came with forza. I was all excited and then spent the whole day downloading the game and updates. What a downer. Literally haven't played it for 8 months due to going to university now as a 30yr old and a new baby. But decided to pull it out last few days over the xmas break.

Wow do I suck at mutilpayer shoot them up games like cod b lol

I've only played the first chapter of Halo but so far I am liking it. Its pretty much the reason I bought the Xbox One. I'm a bit of a sucker for the series since playing the first Halo with my brother on the original white Xbox. Out side of COD and HALO I don't really play FPS though.  I'm more a GTA/Assassins Creed player.

Just finished the 'Hunt the Truth' podcasts which were really good, though if you've watched any of the Halo: fall of reach animated series you're probably not going to be as surprised as I was.

If you do PC gaming at all, look up a game "spin tyres" on YouTube.  Man, it's a way to waste a few hours in a night.  4x4 game..
