I have been looking at how to increase my comfort when sleeping, due to a touch of arthritis in my hips not allowing a comfortable nights sleep in the camper. We have a foam mattress that is very firm and also and eggshell on that. Its still not enough. Looking back through the forum on mattresses I see a couple have added a microfiber mattress topper to this. Has anyone done similar and especially if you have pain has this helped? All is fine once I'm back in my own bed at home.

Invest in a purpose made innerspring http://madetomeasuremattresses.com.au/ (http://madetomeasuremattresses.com.au/). I did and so much better for me than foam.
-
try a queen size pump up with built in pump, you can increase / decrease hardness as you want with a turn of knob, folds up to nothing which makes more for room awning / tarp or whatever. $60 at big w and YES they are the ducks nuts. we both have arthritis and steel joints.
$60 might be worth a try

just sent them an email thanks Mike, but I am concerned that it may be out of my price range.

Laf do you mean an airbed? I have a 4wd queen self inflating mattress but not thought about adding that to the two I have....will definitely try it next trip.

These guys are local and I can vouch for how comfy their beds are.

The purpose made ones have padding one side and therefore allows maximum spring height. A cheaper option could be a thinner standard mattress found at some discount stores...maybe fantastic furniture. It all depends on the available height your camper can accommodate without becoming too difficult get cover on when packing up. Weight is also a consideration if you open your camper top or under bed access.

self inflating mattress maybe

I too have old uncle arthur itis so we changed to an innerspring and foam egg shell on top and after 10 months living on the road in it, I only have the occassional night where the old uncle keeps me awake. Hips have never bottomed out like on high density foam mattress (paid $380 from clark rubber for it, now sits in plastic in garage) cost us $299 for innerspring and already had eggshell.
good luck

When we got our camper the mattress in there was terrible like a brick we purchased a queen size innerspring mattress and couldn't be happier the bed base was a bit bigger than queen size but this now means the mattress is not pushed right against the canvas if there is rain or condensation on the camper. I just have a woollen underlay on it a double one we had in the cupboard but more for warmth if camping in cooler months than for extra comfort.
-
Our soft floor camper came with a foam mattress, we fitted a egg shell and a mattress topper on the mattress, we also purchased 2 self inflating mattresses from Aldi and placed these under the foam mattress, the finished product is as near to as sleeping on our bed at home. The 2 self inflating mattresses are also used in a roof top tent as the mattresses in it is bloody awfull.

I ended up getting a custom one made from Makin Mattresses. Only cost $50 more than there standard size mattresses!
-
+1 for the queen size bed from the bed shop, makes camping a pleasure, actually the one in the camper is better than the one on the bed at home!

NOT HAPPY WITH .....MADE TO MEASURE MATTRESS sunny coast

I should have added, Makin Mattresses also used 4" springs instead of the usual 6" springs and only put 'wadding' on one site of the mattress to keep it as low as possible so the CT's travel cover didn't need extending. All this and the custom size only cost an addition $50.

Hey linda. We also use a matress topper similar to what muz has, I think we got it from harris scarfe. We love it, it gives enough cushioning and comfort to keep di happy, but still firm enough for me and my dodgy bricklayers back! I actually reckon its more comfortable than our bed at home!
It also provides a bit of insulation and warmth when cold.
-
Thanks everyone we are going to try the less expensive options. So first throw on the self inflating mattress, then a mattress topper.

l dragged the 9in feather top innerspring into the CT in a zip up bag to keep it dry & clean . the only thing that improved the sleep is the 2 sided electric blanket run from the inverter . No cold nights in my CT

We decided to get a innerspring mattress for the CT ,went up to sunny coast spoke to owners ,ordered a 4" single sided hard innerspring due to bad back ,there were told that we will be living in the CT for next 5 years , Got mattress delivered $100 . All good .5 months old mattress starts to go out of shape, springs sagging YES WE DID ROTATE MATRESS EVERY WEEK, Rang shop ,yes send it back will look at it /fix it ..great. PROBLEM =You pay $450 for mattress fine...If the product is not up to standard you would think that the maker would pay for the cost of freight for it to be returned/fixed and freighted back to customer,NOT A HOPE IN HELL .$750 total, 6 mounts later same problem, mattress was donated to local TIP...
-
Our mattress is foam, but really hard foam. The good thing is that unlike some foam mattresses where both of you end up lying in the saggy bit in the middle this one is quite firm.
The down side is that it is hard, bloody hard. That is why we bought the mattress topper. Now it is really comfortable. I prefer it to my brothers inner sprung one in his CT.
-
Had a foam mattress that came with my setup but after spending one night on it I went out and purchased an inner spring pillow top thing, makes camping for a week or so much more enjoyable, until ya have to get up in the morning

I have a bad back that with the innerspring mattress was still slowly getting worse as the nights went on. Went into Clarke Rubber and got a Memory Foam mattress topper and within one night was pain free. Have tried the egg crate style and they are hopeless compared to the memory foam was not the cheapest but it works.
