It obviously wasn't one being recalled that passed me on the Glenburn to Yarra Glen Road at the Kinglake turnoff doing 120km per hour towing a large caravan yesterday. How he didn't manage to roll the van over the side on the bends still amazes me. Must have been in a hurry to get his Jeep serviced....

Because it isn't a Toyota or a Nissan!

Perhaps people buy them because they are very good vehicles and exceptional value for money, this is mostly why I own a Jeep.

Every vehicle has its share of issues, just look at recall.gov.au.

Seemed a pertinent thread to stick the latest news from Jeep (Fiat Chrysler)-

I've owned a Nissan, a Toyota and yes a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Jeep looked great and went great (I had the model with the Mercedes Diesel), the trouble was it started falling apart after four years of easy work and I couldn't be bothered waiting six weeks for minor parts to be shipped from Singapore. As an ownership experience it was horrible. Good vehicles and exceptional value for money? Not in a million years.

 ;D

I love my Jeep. Ownership experience has been awesome, and I have a new hobby as well.

I would never buy a new one however. Come to think of it, about 15 years old like mine and fully sorted seems about right.

We've got a 2004 KJ model, goes good on the beach, tows the van like a rocket and when we go off road, its a gem.
If fact, as we turn from the bitumen, the Jeep just excels up the driveway.

The wife goes off road most days.

And speaking of old cool cars, would love either of these.

Being a former Jeep GC owner ('02 Overland V8) I love these articles. They make me rest easy at night knowing I did not trade up to newer models (was dangerously close to doing so at one point).  The pain still lingers, perhaps if I am bored I will dig up my email to Jeep Australia head office with my list of complaints and repairs.  Its agonising reading for Jeep owners, but bloody hilarious for everyone else  ;D

I direct my friends who 'think' they might like to buy one, to the JD Power Customer Satisfaction Surveys taken each year in the states. Chrysler brands own the bottom 10 spots consistently.

Then presumably the leadfoots and hoons will be muchly pleased if the rumours are true-

Yes, the 380 is one of the Chrysler/Fiats occupying the lowest depths of the surveys. There are so much smarter decisions in car buying for cops than that. Having said that I own a Subaru Tribeca, proudly made in Indiana and it has been a pretty good car.

Actually Chrysler seem to have lifted their game. They are delivering better than anticipated owner satisfaction apparently.

When the topic of  Jeeps comes up plenty of people  jump in with the "he bought a Jeep" jokes. The fact is this is a pretty serious subject for plenty of people who have been stung, not so much through ordinary build quality and poor mechanics but having to deal with the basket case which is Chrysler/Fiat or whatever it is that they call themselves these days. Have a look at the sales figures, five years ago they were churning out 1500 Grand Cherokees a month, these days they would be jumping for joy if they can find 500 suckers willing to part with their money on these good looking piles of junk. The general public generally gets these things right. That's why Toyota was selling 1200-1500 Prados a month five years ago and they are still doing it today.

My dads business is next to a Jeep dealership and he was asking about the Fiat Freemont re-badged Jeep, the dealer was saying sales were low so  Fiat-chrysler took some back and re-badged them as Jeeps even though a lot of the sheet metal is different between the 2  ???

Personally I'm not interested in any car without a 5yr 130000km warranty like the lad's commercial Triton and there's no doubt KIA have upped the ante on them all. If the penny is finally dropping for Jeep then it's high time Toyota, Mazda and Nissan got up to pace with 5 year warranties since they often do that when they have runout model sales anyway. In that regard I was comfortable taking the plunge early on with CVT with the missus shopping trolley. The Mitsi Colt came with 5yr/100000 all over warranty and also a 10yr/160000km power train warranty for the first owner and it performed flawlessly for 90000kms before we changed cars. You want me to step outside my comfort zone and try new technology then you better give me the appropriate insurance package in the deal upfront so I know exactly what I'm paying for.

I have owned 2 Jeeps from brand new, and I look after my cars but never again!!!

Also been a member (and still am) of a Jeep Club and we had to change our Constitution as we had to get rid of the '% of Jeeps to non Jeeps in our Club' clause as members were disowning them and buying other brands.  Says a lot really!

Had a conversation with a friend on Sunday night. He was putting his van up for sale as the motor in his 10yo 124k Commander seized last week. Oil starvation according to the Hobart dealer. Willing give him a discount on a new motor (can't be economically repaired they suggested)  $34k!!!  ($44k full price). He's sourced a secondhand one from a wrecker for $12k. He is sad (to say the least). Car was serviced by the book.

"clutch issues - 50,000klms?? You should be happy with that"

its just ****ed that they treated people that way, some people had to sell their GU's as they didnt have $15,000 to replace their <100k engine.
