Hi all - we pick up our Lifestyle CT in a few weeks (YEEEEHHHAAAA!!) so I thought I'd start looking into insurance quotes.
Just curious to know who you use and/or recommend...
Cheers ~ Mel ;D

Do a search for insurance and you will come up with a few threads.
To save you the time though; the long and short is go with CIL.
-
Did the search and ended up going with CIL. We have a month old Lifestyle.
-
+ 1 to searching and +1 to CIL
Interestingly i recently had insurance quoted by a broker for both our vehicles. At the bottom of the broker's email it had "we do insurance for campers/boat/everything let us know what you have and we will quote it" (paraphrasing)
I thought bugger it and asked them to quote, mentioning that I was not unhappy with CIL ... response was basically "if you are using CIL already its not worth us quoting" good enough for me!

I know CIL is a recommended company but when i went thru this there was a good reason why i stayed away from them not entirley sure why but someone on here said check out GIO cheaper and they cover more plus including offroad.Make sure you know what they cover and what they dont .
-
Don't know if they're any good, haven't had to use 'em...but also with CIL
-
... and they cover more plus including offroad ...
Yep ... CIL.
Make sure you know what they cover and what they dont .
Agree 100%!!!!! This is the bit that everyone forgets.
If you don't understand the policy (or wording), call the potential insurer and make them explain it in Simple English (rather than the Complex English they currently use). If they want your business, they'll take the time to ensure you understand any point/s, and be happy to do it.
*Start Personal Opinion* When we were insuring, our chosen aforementioned insurer was the only one that said "CT ... yep ... we ensure those" ... and since none of the others did (the 5 others I called thought it was a box trailer with a canvas tarp covering it ... or there abouts ... and I left one still wondering what exactly I was on about) I went with the one that could identify my strange and unusual not so box trailer vehicle. If you are going to insure something, the insurer had better bloody know what it actually is otherwise there is no point insuring with them! *End Personal Opinion*

From memory CIL didnt insure contents in your toolbox or inside the annexe as it didnt have hard walls or floor. But you would have to ask them as i notice CIL have this in there current Product Disclosure.Just checked my GIO Disclosure as my insurance is due for renewal and it doesnt say anything about not paying for theft of contents inside annexe which has the soft walls but i will be checking tomorrow as dont want the Engel,Honda or other exspensive iems not being insured.Im sure this is why i went with GIO .I just had a brief read of both disclosures and they are vertually identical except for the annexe part and i dont think i seen vet exspenses on the CIL .

However, CIL still insist on calling it a 'caravan' in its policies, as do all the others.
Likewise, VicRoads insist that it is a 'box trailer', FFS!
How fekn hard is it to acknowledge the existence of our class of vehicles?
Surely there are enough of us out there now to insist our vehicles are acknowledged to exist and accurately described.

I have TCIS, a bit dearer but I think they offer more. I guess I won't know how good they are until it's too late?
-
I went RACV.
they insured the CT, annexe and contents all at separate figures
It was clear they know what a CT is
-
TCIS and they know what a CT is.

I'm in the same boat (camper trailer anyway). Did the ring around, surfed the net, responded to emails and have read so many threads here about Insurance for camper trailers my head hurts.
My situation is that I'm purchasing a new Ultimate Xplor for pickup next Feb/Mar 2014, live in the ACT, not impacted by age or driver experience excesses etc. Looking at the numerous threads on MySwag you end up seeing the most recommendations for CIL, TCIS, AAMI and State Motoring Associations - NRMA, RACV etc. So, I concentrated on those first three plus NRMA since I live in the ACT. All four companies understood what a camper trailer is and some even define them in their PDS. They still use the term caravan throughout the policies though.
I was going to attach a spreadsheet I compiled from the PDS' with the major areas of insurance concern from my perspective (which more than likely does not suit everybody); however, it looks like you cannot add those types of files. If anybody wants a copy just email me.
First, everybody will have differing priorities, campers and expectations regarding Insurance. So, my two bits worth applies to my situation.
My top priority is for coverage 'new for old' since I am purchasing a brand spanking new Xplor. This moved me towards the NRMA and CIL policies as they cover 'new for old' for two years compared to only one year for AAMI and TCIS.
NRMA and CIL both require optional cover for an Annex.
While CIL details their contents cover very well, there are a lot of limits. Both companies insured up to a maximum of $1000 total; however, CIL has limits in certain areas. A higher cover is available as an option for both.
Where CIL and NRMA differ markedly is in the area of Excesses (aside from age and experience). NRMA has two excesses - Basic $200 and Hail or Cyclone $200. However CIL has four types of excesses - Basic Caravan $200, Basic Annex $200, Off-road $200 and Transportation $100. So in the case of CIL if you are off-road (which is where we like to be), have a loss or damage to the camper and requires transportation, your starting excess totals $500!!
Emergency accommodation - CIL up to $100/day for a maximum of $500. NRMA is up to $100/day for a maximum of seven days ($700).
So for my situation the NRMA policy seems to provide more for what I require.
Finally, the policy costs for 12 months cover for my situation. CIL $920 and NRMA $850.
Once the Xplor is over two years old and the 'new for old' is no longer required, I'll probably go with either AAMI (have other policies with them) or TCIS. TCIS was $715 and AAMI $814.

Just double check you policy i could not figure out why my premium was so expensive as compared to others with CIL they had accidentally added a zero to my annex cover making the annex approximatly the same price as the entire goldstream

Nope. Annex quote insured for $1675, as I requested.

Had our CT catch fire while towing over Xmas. Tyre burst at 100kph and caught fire.....
The fire was primarily confined to the wheel well, but some damage caused to winding mechanism when struggling to open the pop top to get to the fire extinguisher
Anyhow, it was a 1973 model insured for $6500 with RACV. They towed it, wrote it off and are sending a cheque for $6500. Didn't even bother trying to seriously fix it...thank christ
So, I will happily plug RACV

Good result, what are you going to replace it with?

Not sure
I want to go look at Aussie Jay, Aussie campers in Mornington and Johnnos
Any advice?

Affiliation with NRMA
Whoever you insure with, make sure that everything is covered... Ask about the Annex AND ALSO contents. Some companies cover you BUT you need to add the annex & contents.
