Title: How many KMs have you got out of a car?
Post by: FalcOn on October 06, 2013, 06:58:36 PM
A good advertisement for Volvo with the one owner driving 3 million miles in the one car.

http://www.carpoint.com.au/news/2013/volvo/p1800/volvo-p1800s-posts-third-million-mile-39010?R=39010&Cr=1&surl=aHR0cDovL2VkaXRvcmlhbHN5c3RlbS5jYXJzYWxlcy5jb20uYXUvRGVza3RvcERlZmF1bHQuYXNweD9OdHQ9Vm9sdmxvJlRhYklEPTIyMDg3ODYmTnRrPURlZmF1bHQmRD1Wb2x2bG8mTm5lPTE1JnNpZD0xNDE4RjQ2RDU3NEEmU2VhcmNoQWN0aW9uPU4mTnR4PW1vZGUrbWF0Y2hhbGxwYXJ0aWFsJk49Mjk4MSs0Mjk0OTY3MjgxKzQyOTQ5NjcyNzkmRHg9bW9kZSttYXRjaGFueSZRcGI9MSZOcz1wX0RhdGVBdmFpbGFibGVfRGF0ZVRpbWUlN2Mx

I have never got 100,000 KMs before I got restless and bought something new! Got me wondering though, how many miles (KMs) would you drive in your life? This guy has averaged over 63,000 miles every year for 47 years. That's 100,000 KMs a year - guy needs a camper trailer!

At the moment I drive close to 30,000 KMs per year. Average would be less, but at 25,000 KMs over the same 47 years I would drive 1.17million KMs which I wouldn't have guessed. Should be good for a couple of million kilometres in my driving life. Not sure I would want to do it in the one car with all the new tasty cars to have in my driveway though!

I have a relative who has ticked over 1million in his 97 Toyota starlet! He is trying to sell it back to Toyota ATM.

Minimal services , cheapest fuel, just drives it

So far the Subaru Outback has 362,000 km on the dial.

I was driving my 67 beetle when the odometer turned over "all the zeros".
Have some photos somewhere.
However, there was nothing unusual in that for the old 'dak dak!   :cup:

438,751 at this moment for the troopy.
I have the full service history.
Pump and injectors a few times,
4th Timing belt.
1 x Clutch @120,000, still good as it is heavy duty.
No Diff or G/box work at all, other than a seal kit in front diff.
I did the turbo for the heck of it recently.
She still pulls well, the Oil Catch Can is collecting some fluid, so there must be a slight lose of compression, but I am not concerned.

How long to keep it for? I hope to pass it on to my 4 year old son.
We are selling the wife late model car, and shall get a 1990's family truckster, why, nothing I can't fix in it.

1988 Mazda 626 319,000k's, had it in the family since 1998
The only things I have not fixed or overhaul is the wheel bearings and the P/S pump.
Practically everything else..... overhauled at some stage.
Daughter no.1 is now 18 so sharing the driving, calls it the Mazderati.

One of the 5 cars ( 3 work utes ) a 89 DLX Rodeo clocked up 328,378  when the middle son rang me up one arvo last year and said  "there's Smoke coming out of the exhaust fairly thick and i'm about three blocks from home and it stopped on me".......thick head..... it was steam.... put  new head gasket & did the head up and it's still going strong, the only other work had been tyres every year and a regular service religiously, three months ago shouted it new shockies and suspension rubbers and the youngest boy gave the tray a coat of jam... still looks ok

We've got an ageing fleet!

Mine:  2000 diesel Hilux 4x4.  Purchased in 2001 with 40,000km on the clock.  3 weeks ago she clocked over the big 300,000!  Gave her a big birthday at 295, clutch, timing belt, water pump, hoses, radiator, belts, filters and all fluids.  Just need a new set of boots and shocks and she's good for another 150,000.

Hers:  2000 NM Pajero Exceed V6.  Purchased 2008 with 180,000 on the clock and, now has 275 and still drives like a dream.

The back up car:  1992 Camry with 305,000km.  Partner got it around 2000 and we kept it when she got the Paj, cause the things worth nothing and is a handy spare.  If we want a night out, drive it there, cab it home and try to remember to pick it up within a few days!  Paints stuffed, AC stopped working last year, power steering leaks, and drinks a bit of oil, but shes a zippy little thing with a 2L EFI and 5 speed.

Take a Ford Escort RS2000 strip it down, rebuild it and fit it with a worked 3.1 Capri V6,Fire it up and run it in how its to be driven on the track ....nudging 190 on the clock check the mirrors " Total white out " would have looked like the space shuttle launching horizontal ...Total distance travelled 2.5 ks and a big hollow feeling in the pit of the stomach .... ;D

Just over 760,000 on a HZ Statesman.
Would still have it if some DH didn't T bone me,
Cost me a water pump and a coil.
At 350,000 or therabouts put it on gas.
Mech said you have to change this and that etc. decided Don't bother if it fails will then fix it.
And it kept going till the T Bone.
Fantastic car, heaps of room, power, leather.
If I could buy it new again tomorrow i would.

To run 3 million miles you would have to set off with a plan and probably by now getting some bucks from Volvo to see how far it goes. Great PR for them.

I knew a bloke who took their HR all the way around the clock to straight zeros. Not sure many new cars will go that distance. These days they aren't designed beyond 300,000.

One thing in common with all these stories is that after a certain distance they get a life and personality of their own, like a worn in armchair...

I dont go by k's on a clock.
Mind you i think i can fix most problems on the side of the road and a xf is relatively new by my vehicle standards

I had an 80 series with the factory turbo diesel auto in it as a work car for a while.  Clicked over 800000 the week before I handed it back.

The old Holden's only went to 99 999miles. My EH has been around the clock at least once, but There is no way of knowing how many times.
