Title: Nek Minute....Unemployed
Post by: Chesapeake on September 02, 2013, 08:48:01 PM
Had a big career change 5 years ago,had been a mechanic for 27 years cars, cotton farm, back to cars and 4wdrives.Just got sick of dealing with the public and all the Shit that's associated with the industry.Found a new career growing Sweet Corn and Maize,9 months of the year in the paddock ,6 weeks spent in Nth Qld at Bowen for July and 2 weeks of August. Had found the perfect job ,travel, contentment and the job to see me to retirement. Anyway, for a lot of reasons that don't need going into here except to say that some pricks should never be appointed as board of directors of a company they have no comprehension of what that company actually does.
So,end result,a great Australian company has gone arse up, sold to a Large American entity in the seed industry.Good thing out of this is some will keep their jobs, very important in such a small East Gippsland community. Bad news for me, my part in the research department no longer exists.Know there's a lot of others in worse predicaments than me,but after never being out of work, never having to submit a resume,(which I don't have), am mildly concerned about the future. Had a job offer to go back on the spanners, but I remember why I gave it up and don't want that again.
So big question is, Pack up the cruiser, head to qld and drive a truck in the mines, hang out for a non existent job ,or go back to a job I hate.
Sorry if I am sounding negative ,but I'm not in an ideal place at the minute

Sorry to hear that. I am sure that after a few days, you will come to terms with things and a clear way will emerge. The first couple of days a tough as emotions are pretty raw.

I hope some good comes of the situation in the long run.

Sorry to hear. Despise those upstart pricks that just crunch the numbers and look after their own soft arse.

Once you have time to think over options, might pay you to do a bit more research on the mine career options.
Hearing stories there's not as many vacancies v available workers atm, unless you're a diesel mechanic, I hear they're in demand.

I just changed jobs and no more weekend work.

Have a break, clear the head and decide from there. Oh and the resume, I had not done one for 20 years and quickly made one up and got my new job.

Good luck with your decision.

Whatever course you take, I wish you luck. If you can, before you get the next job just take a break. A breath. Not working but looking for work is hard. Recharge and you'll be all the better for it when you talk to your next employer.

What a bugger!!!

There are not a lot of jobs going around this area at the moment. As scarps said, do your homework on the mining industry, one of my mates is sitting in Kal twiddling his thumbs.

My cousin works all over the world for a mob based over there as well, he had to go back last week to do some stuff, he said he could not believe the amount of mining equipment just sitting idle.

Maybe you could suss out the shire, they have a pretty big workshop setup at Nungurner now with trucks, mowers etc etc. They must need a mechanic to service all that gear and you wouldn't need to deal with the public!!

In regards to the resume there are a lot of helpful tips online now for how to set them out and how much information to put in them as well as great samples of cover letters to go with them.  Agree with BigJules if you can get a bit of a break in between and freshen up and apply with clear head will probably make it easier.  Good luck it is tough everywhere seeing people losing work.

Thanks for the comments/concerns .Talkng to the other significant half, will probably spend week or two sorting yard ,home stuff out, spend week on the Snowy camping  and see which direction we go.
While I've not had much input into this forum,I really appreciate the  replies and support shown. Thanks again.

It's getting a bit like that everywhere now.  We just lost 2 from each "branch" in our Aussie wide company and it's just as hard for those still working (our butts off doing the work of 2 extra people).

I agree with those above ... take a few weeks to gather your thoughts and have a well earned breather ... then tackle how it's going to work from there.

Very hard to get in here at the mines in Queensland to drive, chucking spanners you'd have a better chance.  If you want to drive side tippers or run fuel for the mines go West, screaming for blokes over there. Up here is very hard at the moment.  Where I am we are all just ticking over and any week any of us might get the yellow envelope saying "Thanks and Bye".

Maybe different after the election, well most of us kinda hope.  We went from crews of 28 down to crews of 8.

Wish you luck but me and my family are heading West next year for part of our around Aust 2 year working holiday.

X2. Don't  travel to QLD unless you have a definite job to go too. Very quite and unpredictable up here at the moment.

Thats sad news mate.

I had a similar thing.
My boss arranged a meeting"to talk thing through".
5 Minutes later they escorted me to the door like a criminal.
What did I do wrong?
Didn't rub shoulders with the managers.

I had a few weeks of before starting to look at other work.
Now I am working at a much better place doing similar work and get better paid.

Good luck.
