Ok ,
I have 17inch alloy mags on the 100.
But i also have a full set of steel 16x8 rims also.
I have 2 choices
1, remove HT tyres off alloys and fit offroad tyres. (HT tyres still got 30-40K left in em)
2, buy 16 ich tyres and fit to steels and keep 17 for around town use.
I tried to Google as to what the losses are with dropping down to 16 in fuel / performance.
I rally like 285/75/16 as a tyre size and it is very common. anyone been through this or offer any advice.
From quick checks the price jumps a bit between 285/75/16 & 285/75/17

I run both, 16s have BFG AT 285/75/16 and add about 5% to the speedo or for every 100kms on the tacho I’ve travelled 105KMS the 17 are still hwy tyres so offer a different ride to the ATs and fuel can’t really be compared against tyre size without the same tyre on both sets of rims.
I didn’t really notice a difference in power when changing to the 16s mines the V8 petrol not sure if this would be a different outcome with other engine types. ;D

Theoretically speaking (as its about 2.30am, I think I'm sleep typing) the 285/75/17 is a larger tyre than the 285/75/16.
If you were wanting to stay in that 16" range with the same tread width in a 17", then you should be looking for a 285/70/17.
Reason being is that you start your tyre diameter off of the rim size. So you are already and inch taller.
Then you have your tread width which in this case is 285mm.
The 75/70 designates the side wall height. So that 75 is 75% of 285mm.
Generally speaking if you want to maintain the same rolling diameter then if one of those numbers increases (such as wheel size) then you drop one of the other numbers. Such as 75 down to 70.

It's getting better though. Long term the 16's will get harder to get. Tyre sizes are consistently getting larger in diametre.

what he said........except if you are anything like I was, you will get sick of changing back to the highway tyres and just leave the offroads on all the time.
Only other thing to watch for is your GVM. The difference in 16" and 17" rim can affect your loading, ie with the patrols, there was a 50kg increase in GVM when they went to 17" rims

I run 285/70R17 on my 100 with the factory alloys. Don't see any need to go to 16" rims. There's enough (just) choice in the 17" size these days.

This what I have decided to do, and whilst I agree that choose today for 17" tyres is much better then it has been, I think the cost is something to think about also, you may only need to replace a 16" tyre when your away on a trip, but paying a little less regardless is better I think.
It will be a PITA changing them if your away a lot and want your dirt tyres on, but for me, it will only be when im touring with the family on the more serious sort of trip, 3-4 times a year, around 10/12k a year ??.

I like the 16in better, but then I also like Toyotas and holdens.
Plus off road the steel rims are better IMO.

As picked up by you lot there is NO 285/75/17 it is 70 in the height profile, my bad ;D ;D ;D
So I guess I have some decisions to make.
The tyres on it are very new I expect a few years of driving from them so this sways me towards a set of 16,s considering I have the rims. So i might look at a set of 2nd hand tyres as they will only do 5-8K per year.

Hey mate, If your only going to use them a few times a year I would probably go for new.
After time rubber does perish and go hard etc etc, so you would probably get more reliable use out of a new set.
For what its is worth you can pick up a good set of 285/75/16's for around a grand. (summit mud hogs for instance.)
if your only using them that many times you would get a heck of a lot of use out of them.
The other point is that changing tyres is a pain in the rear. Once you put them on you may not change them again ;D
