Title: Hema map vehicles
Post by: DannyG on August 27, 2013, 07:26:45 PM
I think it's fair to say the hema map vehicles get more punishment than most so they need to be reliable.
I know they used to only use Patrols for years then they trialled toyotas I believe?
Now it appears they use Patrols again.

Can any one shed any light on the vehicles and is there a story behind all this? ;D
Just curious......

I got pictures of a 200 serirs map patrol beside my Cruiser out at Thargamindah, guy had just had too much trouble with his 3.0lt patrol. Maybe its a personal choice for contractors?

Lol trust you to be the first to reply!
So there's its not true that he got rid of the 200 series and replaced it with a Patrol because he couldn't afford the oil and fuel? ;)

Is it right that they only use weaco fridges in their vehicles as well?

Danny They also introduced a Pajero.

I go past the Hema office in Brisbane a fair bit as I have 3 customers in be complex. I have my own thoughts. The 200 is never there, the Pajero rarely and a Patrol always. My thoughts, they take the reliable and comfortable vehicles first.

Have noticed a mix of vehicles but most recently 200 series.

If you type Hema 200 into YouTube there is an interesting American review of one of the Australian 200's.

It's probably more likely whoever has the best sponsorship deal going at the time. Highly unlikely they drive around with ARB and Cooper stickers because they look cool.

Carlisle might be able to throw some light on the reason but my guess is that they use whatever is supplied to them.

One of Pat Callinan's mags had an article on the HEMA mapping cars, but I think I loaned the mag in question out.

HEM19X, I might...

Just spent about 8 weeks travelling Cape York, then across the top end and through the Kimberley with the Map Patrol, 01 Map. It's the fully-kitted out vehicle with .5m GPS, etc.
It's a 3L Patrol, a little heavy and underpowered for most of what we do. Rob, the owner, has a 200 Series as his personal vehicle, also branded up, which probably led to some confusion out there.
Hema has never officially had a Toyota Map Patrol...because then it would be called a Map Cruiser!

I've always been a Cruiser guy, and this was the first time I'd travelled extensively in a Nissan. There were plenty of issues (in the end, the price difference between Nissan/ Toyota was easily bridged by repair bills), but I haven't had enough time to say one is definitively better. Saying that, the Cruisers have an amazing track record, and most people, backed into a corner, will admit that this is where the extra money goes when you spend more for a Toyota.
For me, reliability is foremost when I'm touring. Price is secondary. Options are secondary, even aesthetics are secondary...reliability is number one. That's why I'm in a 100 Series now...
